Choppy Playback SOMETIMES!

Hi all. I've been trying to wrap my head around this one, but it doesn't seem to be your run-of-the-mill choppy playback problem that's easily fixed by changing the latency.

I'm running Sonar X1, and my interface is an Audient iD14. I just got the Audient a week ago, set it up, and started recording a new project. All was well. A few days in, I decided to see if I could get lower latency by using an ASIO driver instead of the WDM that I was using. Upon trying it, I found that the inputs and outputs in Sonar no longer correlated to the physical ones on the interface (I couldn't record), so I said "Screw it" and switched back to the WDM driver.

Ever since then, everything I record sounds choppy and I get a dropout 4 out of 5 times when I hit play or record, immediately (oddly enough, if it doesn't drop out immediately, it doesn't at all). Exported tracks are still choppy when played with a media player. And the weirdest part: everything I recorded prior to the driver-switch experiment still plays back fine.

So, quite a pickle. Please offer up any ideas you have. Thanks everyone!

It does not mention ASIO drivers anywhere on the website, but this seems very odd that there would not be.
Did you check in preferences to see if you cannot change to ASIO?
If it doesn't have ASIO drivers I would send it back as it will most likely always be a problem with Sonar. WDM mode often has syncing issues with overdubs.

The jittery playback can be cause by a few things. Make sure to optimize your PC for DAW work. You are  under specs for one thing so I wouldn't expect to much from a duo core laptop. You should be running Win 7 64 bit  on that Windows lies to you when they say you can update to 10 on older machines... forget it. , Can you roll back?

Yeah Windows updated from 7 to 10 behind my back while I was away last week! I had the same playback problems with 7, though.

While I don't expect the world from my setup, it's been able to play 30 tracks with lots of plugins without dropping out or giving weird playback. So the jittery playback isn't a weak computer hardware issue, especially given that it plays the older recorded material quite nicely.

Thanks for the reply! More thoughts from folks? I'm going insane, slowly.

    Whelp, I solved something.

Installing the latest Audient drivers again seemed to work for some reason. Now when I switch to ASIO in Sonar I get, using ASIO4ALL, the proper inputs and outputs on tracks. The recordings that were made while things were choppy still play back choppy; it must be a part of the recordings themselves. But happily, when I record now, there are no choppy waves to be found! Sonar REALLY likes ASIO, eh?

Now to get the band back in to record their whole project again...

asio4all is not a real ASIO driver. It's a wrapper using WDM mode.
It is highly recommended by most people here that you totally remove all traces of asio4all before you install your proper drivers. It's only used as a last resort when a company fails to supply proper ASIO drivers. If that company is telling you to use asio4all then they are the bottom of the barrel for interface manufactures.
If they do supply proper drivers then use those and get ride of asio4all, it causes conflicts.

the Audient iD14 is not even supported by windows 10
    https://audient.com/products/id14-system-requirements

    System Requirements:
    - PC or laptop manufactured after January 2006 - Intel Core 2 @1.6 GHz, or AMD equivalent - 1 GB main memory
    Supported Operating systems:
    - Windows 7 (32 bit) - Windows 7 x64 (64 bit) - Windows 8 (32 bit) - Windows 8 x64 (64 bit)

Just like Johnny says...don't ever buy a device which forces you to rely on using ASIO4ALL to run properly.
its not right. I threw a way an Alesis IO2 like that. The instruction clearly stated: use ASIO4ALL as a supplement Audio driver.
I almost laughed. I almost cried.

Good one Chuck.. I saw this and assumed it was a new interface.
Add this one to the don't buy list.
