I hear ya, soundcards are not cheap (well for a good one anyway)
I have 3 soundcards that do a job all to their own.
1- Focusrite 18I8 The Mic Pres is outstanding and 4 of them helps.
its USB2 and I have never had a problem with it. consistency is big in my studio.
This my everyday AI. It was 350 USA currency.
2- Cakewalk VS 20 for mobile applications and something does not color the sound.
it has 8 faders, a master volume, REC buttons for each track, The Play-Stop-Rec-Rew-FF buttons.
those can be bought cheap used(150.00)
3- Mackie Pro FX16 it uses a USB to capture all channels.
this works well with soundboard mixes, drums, multi channel bus mixes to all one channel.
The mic pres is important for using vocals and such.
however if your only doing midi then a smaller AI will be even cheaper. (100.00 bucks)
as important as the PC and software is to us (Songwriters/Producers - doing what we do),
To me, my opinion is the soundcard is most important of all our tools.
Mic pres is everything, unless you have outboard gear doing that for you (Microphone Tube Pre Amps).
Digital converters is also a big part of it.
Firewire seems to becoming used less and less. being replaced by USB3 and Thunderbolt.
But for what its worth, I would continue using the Onyx with the Firewire card until it totally bits the shed.
Good Luck Richard
