Drag Racing on King's Highway

I just finished this one up.  Back in the old days in Charlotte County, Florida there was a road out in an isolated area called King's Highway.  It just so happened there was a nice straight stretch that strangely had a 1/4 mile run marked on it.  Any time a challenge between two hot car owners occurred, it usually was settled out on King's Highway.  Not the smartest thing to do but what else would you expect average, redneck, teenagers to do.

For some of you old guys it might bring back memories and for the rest of you I hope it brings a grin over your chin.  As always any comments, suggestions, crit.'s, or donations to the Freddy J fund (an attempt at humour) would be appreciated.

Hey Freddie -- this has a real swampy feel to it and it's a good demo for your song.  But (there's always a but right?) for my taste there's just too much reverb on the mix which robs it of its power.  Just a thought.

Thanks for your comments Allan!  I thought that someone might comment on the amount of verb.  I did crank it up particularly on the vocals.  That was intentional on my part.  In my tired old memory, I seemed to recall that a lot of the car songs of the early 1960's used a fair amount of reverb -- as did some of the surf instrumentals.  However, I do have a tendency to overdo the use of it.  I'll have to go back and give it a listen.  Thanks again for the heads-up.

Try using a delay rather than the reverb or in conjunction with less reverb on the vocals at least. Might give better definition.

Or maybe keep the guitar reverb and make the vocals almost dry? If you listen to Jan and Dean or the early Beach Boys there's often very little reverb on the vocals.

    Good one Freddy!
Just thinking that the guitar riff that runs though the song would be more effective without the delay. Sort of gets in the way of the pulse of the song. Keep the reverbs on the other parts though. Nice work.

Freddy, hi. This is very creative - very fun. I really love what you have done here.

I would agree with some of the comments - too much verb. I like the reverb/deay you have on your guitar - but I think the vocals should be much more dry.

All in all - this think this is fantastic my friend - keep them coming.

Very cool song Freddy. Love that guitar sound and riff.
i see where you are going with the vocal effect but I think you could back off on it a bit.

Thanks Tim, Optimus, Mark, and Daryl.  Message received loud and clear.  Rather than going for the smooth sounds of the Beach Boys, I was shooting for the more ---- hummmmm, raucous?? ---- sound of the Trashmen or maybe the Fendermen.   My problem is that I did this number a bunch of years ago and the working files (cwb) were lost a couple of years ago when I destroyed the external hard drive on which they were stored.  I have a friend that has been able to salvage a few tracks on a few songs.  Back in the olden days I did a lot of hot recording.  This song was no exception and therefore, I had to re-record the drums, bass, and bgv's.  I was trying to avoid re-recording the other tracks by messing around with them but obviously that failed.  However, I would like to try again now that I have discovered that transient shapers can be used to cut back on effects such as verb (at least to a limited degree).  I am reading up on this now to see if I can make it work and then re-post the song. If that doesn't work then I will re-do the other tacks.

I would very much appreciate your and anyone's feedback when I get done reading, repairing (or) re-recording, and re-posting.  Thanks again for your valued feedback!!!

    Freddy,

Cool song.  Agree with comments above, a little too much verb on vocals.   It does have a more late 50's feel on the vocal verb treatment than the 60's surf music which is usually more dry.    I like the verb on the guitar but if you don't have the ability to pull back verb on the vocal part, you might try pulling back the verb on the guitar during the vocals to clean it up a bit.  Anyway, cool song.

Hi Mark:  Thanks for the input and thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Well --- I have done some reading and fooling around with this song.  I decided to use the TS-64 that came with Sonar X3.  Oh, first of all, I deleted the JCM 900 plug-in that was on the guitar panned left.  I don't know why I added it but I must have forgotten that back in the olden days when I first did this song I used external FX boxes (e.g. Zooom 505II - my favourite).  It was a major part of the problem and really overloaded  this track.  I used the transient shaper on the other tracks -- particularly the vocal.  I did as much as I dared until the point where I started getting some clicking and distortion.

I think that it sounds a bit better now without having lost the feel I was going for.  It certainly sounds less edgy to me.  Anyway, I hope it does.  I would appreciate it if y'all would let me know what you think.

    Thanks!

hey Freddy - I like this a lot!  very cool groove, nice tune all around!

since you don't have the original any more, maybe you should consider re-recording it?

Cool song, Freddy...   simple but effective, it really gets the point across.  And the "on King's Highway" tail end of the line is quite catchy.

Ditto the above re: delay/reverb though - if you could lower that a bit and/or filter the frequency so it's less of a "double" on both vocals and guitar I think it might help clean things up.  After all, if you're racing on King's Highway you want a clean machine.

Freddy, I used to drag race in North Carolina when I was stationed at Ft.Bragg.  It was a road just like you are talking about I was picturing some of my better races as I listened.    Fun tune.  I could go eeither way with the effects.

Hi Reece.  Thanks for your input -- I always appreciate it.  I think that I have done as much as I can with fooling around with the plug-ins and trying to correct things.  Maybe if I knew what I was doing it might help!  I think that you have a good suggestion.  I am OK with the guitars now but I do want to tame the vocals a bit more which means re-recording.  I am not sure how I am going to do it or when I'll do it.  I am working on about 3-4 more songs and I want to get most of each of them done before I forget what they are supposed to sound like.  However, I have put it on my list of things to get done.  Thanks again.

Hey Steve.  Thanks for taking the time to comment.  If you will note in my response to Reece, I think that the best thing that I can do, given my lack of knowledge and talent on the engineering side, is to re-record.  Thanks and I appreciate your suggestions.

Hi James.  Thanks for the kind input.  Back when I was living in Charlotte County there was very little to do, so the lads and I spent a lot of time in Ft. Myers.  At least Ft. Myers had a walk-in, air conditioned movie theater.  I did move back to Canada when I got married but after a couple of winters we came back to Florida and we are happy in the Tampa Bay area.  Thanks again.

Hey Warren.  Great to see you back on the forum --- you old hot rodder you!  Thanks a lot for commenting.  As you might have read above, I will be working on taking the verb down a bit -- at least the vocals.  It is just a matter of fitting it into all of the other stuff that needs doing.  Thanks again buddy.

I like the idea Freddy though it still sounds a little to much reverb to me.  Will keep the furry lugs open for the remix, if you do one.

Freddy, great idea man.  I agree with most of the other comments.  I would like to hear it without any reverb at all.  I've always liked your voice and don't think that it needs much spatial adjusting.  I know you'll find the right balance.  Keep up the good work.  I always love your guitar too, nice.
