My way of thinking it's much better to quantize after the fact so you can chose which setting best fits the song.
Yeah, in most cases that's right. However, what I have in mind involves recording a lot of my song fragments (hundreds of unrelated verses, choruses, riffs, etc.) into one huge MIDI project, using the same auto-accompaniment style from my arranger keyboard, all at the same tempo and in the same key, so that I can then try out different combinations to see what song ideas work well
together. And for this kind of seamless blending, it has to all be perfectly quantized. And since I know which resolution (1/8 with 50% swing) works well for this particular style, I'd like to have Sonar just quantize all incoming data at that setting, for this particular project.
This isn't intended to be anywhere near a final production, of course - it's just a way of auditioning things together in a sort of systematic, automated way. An aid to composing. Later, when the full song is sketched out, I'll of course record all the individual instrument tracks one by one.
Granted, this kind of project wouldn't be so necessary if I could simply remember how the
second song idea goes, while I'm concentrating on playing the
first one! The first idea always casts such a spell on me while I'm playing it, I can never seem to remember how the next part goes (since, like I said, they've been completely unrelated up 'til now). That's why I'm trying to automate the auditioning process. (the fact that I can't read music doesn't help either)...
