automating delay only in silent parts

I recall seeing something a while back about how to setup a track where there's a delay plug-in (I use NI Replika usually) and there's some kind of key-in to only have it heard when the track is silent.  Basically, I would like the delay effect heard in between vocal phrases, but not during the singing.

Can someone explain how to set this up? I'm a pretty advanced user, but new to Platinum and have never done much of this kind of effect routing.

Thanks!

Neel

I've done this 2 different ways.  The most straight-forward is to automate Replika in the FX bin of the track.  You have to enable it a little before the phrase ends ...

The other way, which I prefer, is to add a send to an Aux track and automate either the Mute or Volume of the Aux track with Replika in the FX bin of the Aux.  This way Replika has the full signal going and using volume makes it easy to ramp the delay output in/out.  I set the delay 100% wet and use the Aux fader to get the delay level right.  Doing this you also automate panning for some more creative effects.

Thanks for the reply, Bob. I figured I could do this manually like you illustrated, but I thought there was a way to do this automatically with a sidechain somehow. Does Replika needs to have a sidechain option for that to work?

This http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3348935 may help. It works with any delay plug-in because it uses a separate plug-in to duck the effect.

Craig's method ^^^ works but can be tricky to adjust such that the gating isn't overly abrupt. The method is more transparent if you substitute the Sonitus compressor for a gate.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
