"Standing On The Moon"

Another older (2012) song I wrote, with the lovely and talented Jane Siskind singing lead vocals.  She wanted to sing about lack of communication in a relationship, and this is what we came up with.  Enjoy, and as always, comments and critiques are most welcome.

You had me hooked right outa the gate! Great sonic quality in those instrument tracks. The vocals sound fantastic as well. Love the harmonies!

First of all, 2012 does not qualify as an old song around here. Dredge up something from 1999 and post it.  :)

Nice tune, vocals come across well. I think the mix had a lot of upper end sparkle, and maybe too much in spots. You might try the piano eq'd with a little lower eq bump? On the other hand, the piano is super clear in the mix. Maybe duck it a little when she is singing?

I think you need more tasteful lead guitar noodling in this. Just in spots.

Linda Ronstadt/Carly Simon/Carole King are some very favorable comparisons I could make, nice composition here.

cheers,
-Tom

I've written over 50 songs in the past 4 years, so for me a song from 2012 is many songs ago.

Nice clear and crisp mix.  Vocals sound great, and the hook + underlying chord changes are really catchy.   I agree with Tom about the "sparkle" - it almost seems like a bit much in spots, but I'd be hesitant to change it since for whatever reason it seems to work well for the song.   Happy, bouncing song with a happy, sparkly mix.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions Steve.  I'm going to work on remixing and EQing it.  As well as experimenting with added a little lead guitar to fill in some of the blank spots.
And thanks for your comments for "Rain Bird" as well!

nice song, excellent vocals
I'd back off of the verb on them, tho and I also think the piano is pretty bright

Thanks much!   Yeah I always tend to put too much reverb or delay on everything.  I have an aversion to the dry, dead studio sound.   Probably have to find a happy medium.  Tape a big sign on my monitor "LESS VERB!"

I don't know, I like the reverb on her voice. Everything else seems fairly dry, so I don't think it is overdone.

Nice song, really strong vocal. Mix is pretty good as well.

Thanks Dan.  But you guys are supposed to be my objective ears, because I can't make up my mind half the time whether there's too much reverb, not enough compression, drums too loud, etc.  If I wanted conflicting thoughts, I'll just ask myself.  LOL!
I'm kidding of course, and definitely appreciate ALL comments and suggestions, even if they do conflict with each other.  Normally I put extra reverb, delay, and/or chorus on my own vocals (anything to make them sound better), but with Jane singing this song, I went pretty lightly on the efx.   I did have a fair amount of digital delay on the drums, to give them that live feel.  There's a setting in Breverb for drums called "Alive".  That's my go to setting for many of my drum tracks.

Anyway, thanks again for listening and taking the time to comment.  Keep 'em coming please!

She has a nice voice and the song sounds well written and arranged, can not make my mind up about the reverb on the vocals, sorry.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Wookiee.  I've had people tell me (when I have to much reverb on my vocals) it sounds like I'm in a big empty room and it doesn't match the acoustic sound of the other instruments, as far as what kind of room everything is being played in.  I never thought of it from that perspective, so lately I've been trying to make sure the instruments and vocals sound "sonically compatible".

Just one more thing to remember when I'm doing all the post-production mixing and mastering.
