There are some definite fun things (like one or two of the roller coasters) and the 360 degree outdoor experiences are pretty cool but, even with a phone capable of 2560 x 1440 resolution it still wasn't as sharp as I would have expected and (could be just me), but I wasn't able to get it into a very tight focus.
Of course, part of it is just my expectations. Even back when the first big-screen TV's came out I wanted to have the screen seem huge not just sit farther away. I tried some of the original VR stuff decades ago and it was like seeing a 108" TV except you're sitting 70 feet away... The current stuff is MUCH better in that regard and, with good content, will have you looking up, down and all around. Now I'm not saying you won't like it! We all had some great times playing Quake, Doom and Castle Wolfenstein, but if you compare the graphics in those to what you get in Rage (for example - and a good example since they have easter egg rooms for all of the three games I previously mentioned), you'll see a HUGE difference in the quality.
When/If VR can handle the highest definition correctly AND the apps are updated to have more options (and/or better interaction), then it will be killer! There's even a version of Street View (see Google Maps if you've never used this) which is actually pretty cool. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to head down a street like there is on your PC and there's this rather large menu area that sits right in front of your eyes when your looking forward. If I could virtually explore an area without a menu that would be VERY cool.
The image app that you can get simply doesn't do the main thing I want from an image app: Show an image full screen without any text. The current offering (an offshoot of the same image app that comes with your android phone) puts all the images across the screen like a carousel (slide left and right to get to the next and previous images). It also has black area around the image with the image name across the top. All of that is useful, but I REALLY want to see just the image by itself and have the ability to zoom in (which it does have in limited fashion).
Basically, most of the apps just need to be baked a bit longer and that won't happen until there's a large enough buyer base to make it worthwhile (i.e., profitable).
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!
