I wonder if it's safe to update Win 8.1 machines now that WX is no longer free.

I use Win10 at work and although not "bad," per se, there are several exposed issues that just fall into a nuisance category. For my home machine 7 Ultimate will be fine as the computer "should" eat it before 2020 anyway.

I did find an interesting tidbit regarding 7 Ultimate in that 5 features are removed going to 10Pro (the default). Most of these no one ever uses, and I only use 2 of them; but the part I found interesting is that I was told that 10 Enterprise is the same version as 10 Educational Edition. I questioned this a few times, and he swore up and down that this was true. I would never have guessed such a thing, but it does make sense from a couple perspectives.

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.

What issues are a nuisance to you?

For me, I need to open a truckload of documents to feed others. The search engine gets flaky when used heavily, so I defaulted to adding "Date Accessed" to the search window... and that column sporadically disappears between search uses. Even adding special characters to files doesn't allow just those to be searched for without a ~= (tilda equals) to lock the search. As I had to resort to indexing the file contents as well as the names (since some names were terribly chosen), the special characters just allows them to be "bubbled" up to the top of a list of 200 documents. Even resorting to "subsequently moving" many of these to other folders, there are always the stragglers that need to be found.

That is just the search engine. The other "insult" is I also use Office 2016 at work, but still on 2007 at home. Many issues with Word alone (specifically document formatting... Header 1, Header 2, yada yada) have not been addressed in the past 9 years. Some have workarounds (carried forward from Office 2007, and others are simple minefields you need to know "do not ever do this!"). Change control can become a nightmare quickly.

There are also a handful of security overlays that were written in Win7 and still not updated for Win10. Most of these fall into the lap of vendors, but after a year I would expect this not to be a relevant issue. Microsoft has a vested interest in the outcome of this one.

Are you allowing indexing in Windows 10? I have found its search to be darn good.

I don't use word. I like wordperfect. I have ever since it was a DOS program. Then I don't see what that has to do with Windows 10.

As to security Windows 10 is way more secure than Windows 7.

I've been really impressed with W10 over the last year. I don't use any of the fancy new stuff like Cortana or any of that. No touchscreen stuff. Have never even launched the new browser.

I just find it to be really stable and fast. And while I know some people have had difficult upgrade experiences, for me, it was fairly astonishing. Took about an hour, coming from Windows 7, and when it came back up, still had active logins and so on. I set aside a whole day for it, but was back up and working before lunchtime. I think it's the best thing MS have ever made.

There. I said it.

If you missed the July 29 deadline, you may still be able to get a free copy of Windows 10. Microsoft has extended the deadline for those folks that need assistive technologies. You simply click a box that says "I use assistive technology" and you can download and install Windows 10 free.

More info over at LifeHacker at http://lifehacker.com/you-can-still-get-windows-10-for-free-if-you-use-assist-1784584166

Hope that helps!

I upgraded my two machines just under the deadline.  My main desktop/studio machine has had issues with occasional stuttering dropouts that would spoil takes.  I could count on at least 4 or 5 of these in a given recording session.  No attempt at remediation seemed to help (including increasing buffer sizes and looking for drivers that weren't playing nice).

I must be dreaming.

The problems have gone away.  I can use 64 sample buffers at 44.1 KHz (1.5 ms) with no hiccups at all!

Hopefully, after the deadline, we won't have to hear about Win10 upgrades anymore. My Win7 machines will die Win7 machines, lol. Next DAW will be Win10x...

Apparently it is still possible to activate a Windows 10 update using a product key from an eligible Windows 7 or 8 version if you have installation media. But clicking the annoying little icon on your computer will take you to an offer has ended window. If this is an oversight, there is no telling how long it will remain.
