It was Sal Salvador's studio. I don't remember what floor, I think it was the eighth. I met and took lessons with Allen, Barry, and Sal once a week over the course of 5 years. I know my ****, it's just not my favorite genre. I had a mean jazz teacher as a youngster you may know him, Marv Lundblade. It's just not in my blood. I mostly learned jazz cuz my dad LOVES the s***. I know all the bs and the ballyhoo. :D:D
Alright , now it looks like we are finally getting someplace ...
Of course , I know exactly who , what and where you have just mentioned ....
I believe the studio you are talking about was on the forth floor right down the hall from a major recording studio that was booked 24 7 recording disco .
Yeah I was there. Back then , at the time , I was very fortunate to have studied with Barry Galbraith .
I studied with Barry for years right up until the time he stopped teaching due to his health issues .
I consider my self very lucky to have been chosen as a player to be in one of his guitar ensembles ...
Played in Barry's ensemble for about 2 or 3 years . I'm sure it was one of the the lasts ones he put together .
Yeah, as far as Sal Salvador and Allen Hanlon goes they were nice players / teachers . They were very nice to me in general. I didn't study with them since I had no need too ...
I was to busy getting my @ss handed to me a few times a week on the bandstand and at jam sessions ...
All the Jazz musicians I played with back then practiced a " Secret Form of Tough Love " ...
They liked taking a guy like me and they would say " hey Kid are you gonna play tonight ? " I would say Yeah ...
These guys knew me pretty well, so what they liked to do was play all the tunes I wanted to play on and knew first, they would purposely play those when other guys were jamming .
They would then call me up to the bandstand and call tunes on me they knew I didn't know well ....
I'm telling you , these guys did that $hit on purpose just to teach me a lesson ...
I would then take my $orry a$$ , pick it up off the floor and then put it in a paper bag so I could bring it home and sew it back on with a needle and thread .... A few days later , or the next week I would show up again and they would pull the same exact stuff on me ...
So I got wise ( or so I thought ) I practiced the tunes they kept calling on me and got them down thinking I was gonna show them ...Sure enough , they pulled the same stuff on me and hit me with the same tunes ...
I looked at the Organ Player and he was smiling at the drummer and I said to my self Yeah I got you guys he he he ...
That was very short lived because they only let me have my little victory that one night ...
The next time I showed up to play , they pulled the same thing ..they played all the tunes I knew with other players ...then they would call me up to the bandstand and they called all new tunes on me I didn't know
After doing that for a couple of tunes they would say to me " hey kid what tunes do you want to play " so one by one I called the tunes I had victory's with from the last session ..One by one for each and every tune I called , the players would then say OK lets play that song and you play the head...
Then they would change the songs keys on me right then and there less than 10 seconds before we played the tune ...
To tell you the truth I got so good at having my a$$ handed to me on the bandstand that I finally got wise and bought me some Velcro
Well as far as if Jazz is your thing or not , Yeah I can understand that ...
At least in my situation , all the players that did that stuff to me were not your run of the mill backyard barbecue players or frustrated music teachers ...
A lot of them were sideman in top Jazz Bands and in some cases the very leaders of know Jazz bands themselves .
A lot of these players I'm talking about were all about the music and very dedicated ...
I have mentioned this before here on this forum that I was tight with Dizzys guitar player for years ...plenty of times I would catch him at his gig
w Dizzy and then after the show he would drag me around to all kinds of Jams and places to met and jam with players I sure miss them Days ,
Kenny
