FYI - Windows 10 Default is to have System Restore Turned OFF

Here is a pretty good read on Windows 10 System Restore, which is turned OFF by default.

I turned it On and set the maximum size for my C: restore points at around 5 GB (approximately 5% of my 120 GB SSD C:).  I don't happen to use it for any of my other drives, as I have redundant backups of my 5 additional drives.  I also then created an initial System Restore Point, and it seems to be around 5-6 MB in size, so I guess my allocation of 5 GB for maintaining any created restore points seems to be large enough.

Anyways - I just thought with a lot of folks only just recently coming to Windows 10 (like me), I thought this might be helpful to at least be aware of it.

I don't know if the other recovery methods talked about for Windows 10 negate the need for System Restore, but I went ahead and turned it on, regardless.

I run Windows 10 Pro and have completely disabled System Restore in the Policy Editor.

The reason is because I do frequent system image backups and System Restore can easily add several GB of data to that backup. Why add to the backup time when I will always do a full system restore anyway?

System Restore will back up Windows system resources, but I prefer to back up the whole system.

In short, I backup my system every time a change occurs and at a time that I know the system is stable.

That means I backup after Windows Updates and when I install new stuff. I will wait a few days and restart a few times to make sure everything is stable before I do the image backup. (Check the Event Viewer for new entries.)

Restore points are saved in the 'System Volume Information' and don't defragment easily (you will need a 'boot-time' defrag). So this also makes defrags a bit faster.

Correct me if I'm wrong but windows (at least win7) seems to delete restore points in case you execute the "disk cleanup" utility, which I had to run after certain Sonar crashes to delete leftovers and free several GB

Anyway, my manually created restore points have frequently gone missing. Hence, I also stick to regular full system backups.

If you did an in place upgrade it did not alter system restore settings.

I DID do an in-place upgrade, and it DID alter that setting, to default to Off in Windows 10.  I had been SEEING System Restore Points being created during updates, and I was creating my own, on top of those - In Windows 8.1.

This was NOT turned on when I launched Windows 10, following the in-place upgrade.

I experienced the same after installing the Win 10 1607 update. I had to re-enable System Restore for my "C" drive.
Not cool that Win 10 changes things like this when doing an update. It makes one wonder what other options get changed "under the hood" when doing the update. IMO, no user/personal settings should ever be changed by MS when doing this type of update. I am now consciously reviewing my settings as I move about in Win 10 1607 just to verify my personal settings are still intact.

    Cheers,

Just checked System Restore on my Win 10 (with the anniversary update).  System Restore is still turned on, as it was before the anniversary update.

Same here. I set it for lowest amount of space.  Back in the XP days I used Roxio Go-back. It was really great for gaming.
