Can You Have Two Versions Of Cakewalk On Your Computer At One Time?

Hi Guys,

I currently have Sonar Professional but in all honesty it lacks some of the features of a Sonar Light version that came with the V-Studio. For instance, I can't snap to grid using the staff view but I can with the older version (I know you can use piano roll view and it will snap but I like the staff view, being a musician first and a 'programmer' second). I would like to do composing with the old version, then open the song up in Professional and use its capabilities for production. Will having two versions of CW on the same computer confuse all the DLL's? Or have any of you done this before and had it work?

Thanks In Advance,

Jim

you shouldn't have any problems installing both on the same PC.
matter of fact I have had several versions of sonar installed at one time with out any conflicts.

Sonar light IE- Sonar LE is basically a lighter version of X1 I believe.
Sonar professional and sonar LE are 2 totally different DAw's in framework.
share some features but mostly the same.

im a bit intrigued though by this theory you want LE because of its usage, because I thought if anything sonar Pro was better in almost every way.
even upgrades to SV.

That reminds me I have Artist and Platinum. The Command Center shows Artist in red but when I click update it says a problem occurred and to contact Support and we all know how THAT goes

I've never had this problem before and I use artist for simple practice tracks. Anyone know how to fix it?

I've been keeping X3e (32 & 64 bit) around while mainly using Platinum.  I haven't had any problems.

At some point you are almost certain to run into project file compatibility problems going from Platinum back though.  I think.  Maybe.  Something to test for.

I had S7 - X3 at one time.  If you change the settings on one of them it will change them on all versions.

Make sure you install the different versions in the right order, i.e. earliest first.

I've never deleted a version of SONAR. Just keep adding new ones. On my current DAW computer I have everything from 8.5 forward. The previous computer has every version I bought before 8.5. I've never had any problems and don't see that it hurts anything. Plus, some newer versions didn't include plug-ins that earlier versions had, so I still have those if I want to use them.

This.. not sure exactly why but it's been quoted many times here.

I have Sonar X1LE , X3 studio , Professional ( now out of date but still opens) and then the latest and greatest Platinum.

I can open any project in any version it would seem but I get a warning if going backwards. I don't really need the old versions but there seemed too be no reason to uninstall. As well it's handy to open them if someone here is having trouble with one of those versions.

Because you don't want the chance of overwriting newer versions of shared files with older versions.  Plus, it seems logical to go oldest to newest as one would do in practice as newer versions are released.

As a rule, the installers are smart enough not to overwrite newer files. The only problem I recall since the introduction of the X series is an issue with the QuadCurveEQ getting overwritten when X1 was installed after X2/3. Still, if possible when performing anything on than an advanced install of a few plug-ins, it makes sense to install SONAR in release order, oldest first.

Guys,

Thanks for all the responses!! Again, I like Professional, but when I compose, I like to use the Staff View. However, in Professional, there is no snap feature in SV, so let's say I'm trying to make a simple 4/4 hi hat on each beat. I follow the 'directions' given in Professional (moving the now time, etc), and even though I simply go 'click, click, click, click' on each beat (the one, the two, the three, and the four) and even though the notes LOOK like they are 'in place' at the correct position, when I play them back at least one of them is off by a 32nd note. When I zoom in, sure enough, the note is off and I have to fix it. I never had this problem on my LE version as you could pick quarter note snap and every note placed perfectly. That is why I am interested in using LE to compose drum and bass tracks, then bring them over to Professional to record guitars and vocals. I believe that the piano roll view has a snap to grid feature. I just don't know why they would get rid of it for the staff view, unless I am missing something. I admit I am not as technically proficient at this as most of you are. I try to make music that is somewhat 'raw' and not as produced (think Mahavishnu Orchestra) so there are many features with which I am unaware. If anyone has any suggestions on how to better use the Staff view, I am more than open to hear them.

Thanks again, my friends!!
Jim
