Favorite Channel Strip plugin?

Hi Guys:
Just wondering is you guys had a favorite Channel Strip plugin that you use?  I'm really pleased with the Waves EMI TG12345.  It definitely has that "Abbey Road" sound.  I feel a bit like Geoff Emerick when I use.  But just a bit.

How about you guys?

You haven't lived until you've taken the Rorschach.

It's happened one at a time but I have started to really like most the stuff in the Abbey Rd bundle. Usually I love the concept of a bundle and get disappointed by the individual plugins. Exactly opposite this time. The Reel ADT is the business.

It's Bass, not Bass.

I like SKnotes strip, although I haven't had a chance to put the newest version through its paces.

Also melda productions has a MONSTER coming, so if you're not hung up on the "vintage analog thing" I'd wait for that.

I was a big fan of this one, but it's been discontinued.

I do use IK's British Channel every now and then and I really like it, but 95% of the time, I stick with Logic's EQ and Compressor (which emulates all the classic compressor behaviour, anyway).

I can't wait to test drive the Mac version of Sonar and its own strip.

Since a channel strip is something I'd want to use on most if not all tracks, I'd say versatility, stability, and low CPU hit are musts. It also has to sound good, of course. The Metric Halo fits that bill nicely.

I love the Abbey Road plugins, but they hammer my poor CPU. I use them on particular tracks or buses.

For those looking for an inexpensive console-style strip, TBProAudio has a new one that's been getting some good reviews.

Cheers,
Eddie

I've never been a fan of channel strip plugins, preferring to build my own chain out of favorite individual plugins. When you cram many functions into one processor, you always compromise something - less control, smaller UI, limited chaining options.

That said, I am a fan of iZotope's Alloy 2. You don't always need maximum flexibility. Sometimes, all you need is some gentle EQ, compression or distortion. Alloy is easy to use, and only eats as much CPU as necessary for the modules you enable.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'm really liking the just-released Nomad Factory Analog Studio Rack.  At its $39 introductory price, I'd call it pretty much a no-brainer.  It's a little more than just a channel strip, but among its seven component modules are emulations of an SSL console channel strip compressor/limiter, EQ and gate/expander.  I've just started playing around with it yesterday and am a very happy camper so far.

I have to agree with this. I have a few channel strips but don't use them very much since I can get the same results with really no extra time spent with my favorite plugins. Plus I get to use the components I've chosen to have.

Unfortunately I don't think I can. The only thing I'll say is that it is more powerful than any other channel strip I've ever seen by a large margin and I could easily mix a whole song using it, with no compromises.

Even with Alloy, I see the modules more as individual plugins.  The Transient Shaper is handy.

Well I still use MixControl Pro by DNR Collaborative most of the time - really is a good plug in - I don't think this is available any longer as the guy behind the company faked his death in a road traffic accident apparently, then ran off with all the money - and he had a great name - Reason Lahalla!!!!!

Re: Favorite Channel Strip plugin? 2016/08/08 15:45:16 (permalink)
As channel strips chosen for deliberate effect, Waves TG12345 and REDD running into their J37 tape sim. Instant time travel to any period from the 1930s to the 1980s. It can be an interesting creative and learning exercise to choose to pretend you're in a studio in, say the early 60s, and work only with the tools that were available then, or at least emulations of them.

As a "usual starting point" when I'm not looking for a "period" sound I mostly tend to combine the Pro Channel EQ with an 1176 emulator, Bozdigital's +10dB compressor or Cakewalk's CA-2A. Other eqs might get used depending on whether I think they'd be useful - especially Pultec sims, SSL channel eq emulators and Boz's +10dB channel strip.

For console emulation I tend to prefer Wave's NLS to Cakewalk's, but it's a very close thing. I often don't use a console emulator in any case, on smaller track/bus count projects it doesn't really make much difference. On higher track counts where there's loads of console emulators doing their thing the result is more noticable, but whether it's desirable depends on the material. Neve, SSL and other console builders aim for their products to distort or otherwise change the audio signal as little as possible, after all.
