How To Associate A VSTi With A MIDI Channel In Sonar X1?

Hi everyone,

How can I associate a VSTi to a MIDI channel in Sonar X1?

So far, I have tried inserting a synth, choosing the synth and then assigning it to the first available MIDI track and then when that failed, I tried assigning it to the specific track, but that was also to no avail.

In order to get the MIDI file to play at all, I have to go into the Console, find the channel and then select the list of "Patch Options", which are all pretty generic sounding. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use the synths that I have paid for - or at least be able to experiment with them.

Can anyone please advise what I am doing incorrectly?
