SONAR OS X Alpha: Free to all or Free to SONAR owners?
Will this Mac version be free for everyone to use or is it only available to those that own/purchase a version of SONAR (artist, platinum etc.)?

I would say everyone who purchases Sonar and whatever version it comes in, all others will have to pay for it. Why would Cakewalk make it Free to all? they would be out of business giving away their software.

I know some companies have free versions of their software and the mac main page says it's a free version so I was curious.

No. I'm really not sure what your question is about. There is no reason to expect CW to give away Sonar. What they clearly said is the Mac version will be available to Sonar members at no charge. This means you need to have a legal version that is current to DL the Mac version. If you are not a current customer you will need to buy a license or buy and upgrade. Think of it as how VST developers offer their plugins. You buy the plugin you get a Win VST and a Mac AU version.

Everything appears to still be on the hush hush as to when SONAR OSX Alpha is gonna be available . SONAR members that have SONAR bought and paid for are even asking when it is gonna come out ... If by some chance my SONAR membership runs out before they release SONAR OSX Alpha , I'm under the clear impression that If I want SONAR OSX Alpha for my Mac , I'm gonna have to re up my member ship to have it available as a registered product in my Cakewalk account When I was a little boy , I guess my mamma was right when she said no tickey no laundry .. All is not lost ,while your here you may notice that there is a lot of free helpful advice to be had here on this forum Kenny

Interesting. I read it as the alpha being free to all as well, I would guess to create interest for the official release when it is finalised. That said I don't care either way. I am quite happy with the windows version:)

I'm pretty sure it will be free but will also be decidedly "alpha". It probably won't be as fully featured as regular Sonar. Kind of a teaser.

Free of not, the main thing is that it will have much less bugs, since CW has to deal with one type of machine only. No more working on mine but not yours or vice versa. dan

I think we owe an apology to jacksojo2000 I re-read the posting for Sonar OSX Alpha and it does say free. The Alpha version may be a free, time limited give away or free with very limited options. We receive a lot of requests for a Mac version of SONAR, so we’re very excited to announce SONAR OS X Alpha. This free version runs SONAR’s built in plug-ins, and works with any Core Audio compatible audio interface. Starting in the Fall, please join us in testing out this new frontier for SONAR—and then share your experiences, or find support, in the new SONAR Mac forum. I will install it on my Mac when it's available.

They announced the release of a "public alpha", so I'm guessing it will be open to all who ask for it at that point.
The final release (if there is one) will be part of subscribing much as 32 and 64 bit versions. If you subscribe to Sonar you get either/both...
That is my understanding...

I think you have it nailed. I guess I was thinking about the version that would be the final release.

John The free version of Sonar is Sonar LE.
Sonar LE is not free. As for the OP, I'd guess the Alpha will be free to all. Basically use that to gauge interest as well as provide feedback on bugs. The actual release will be free for Plat owners, that much is certain based on word from Cake. It is pretty obvious the full boat Mac version will be a paid product.

A free Mac alpha will, unless it's a disastrous bugfest, help Cakewalk in at least two ways. The first is getting it tested on as many Mac/studio configurations as possible and the second is getting people with Macs to download it and take a look at it in the hope they'll like it.
I'll also admit I hope the alphas will be free because lacking a reliable PC and having several reliable Macs of varying ages and spec available I'm currently "out of membership" with the current Sonar release. The Sonar for Mac announcement is what persuaded me to hold off building a new PC, and I'd really like access to the alpha.
And a pricing structure that reflects previous ownership/membership of Sonar... :-)
Sonar Platinum 64bit, Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit, I7 3770K Ivybridge, 16GB Ram, Gigabyte Z77-D3H m/board, ATI 7750 graphics+ 1GB RAM, 2xIntel 520 series 220GB SSDs, 1 TB Samsung F3 + 1 TB WD HDDs, Seasonic fanless 460W psu, RME Fireface UFX, Focusrite Octopre. Assorted real synths, guitars, mandolins, diatonic accordions, percussion, fx and other stuff.

At this point, everyone should just pretend they never heard of a Mac OS version of SONAR until further notice from Cakewalk.
