I Have a (Cut and Paste) Dream

Sometimes around X1 or X2, cutting and pasting across multiple tracks became a hit and miss affair. Sometimes it would work, sometimes the pasting with skew the tracks - some pasting right and some not.
 
When take lanes came into being, it only got worse.  My dream was to be able to cut and paste freely from one take lane within a track (or hell, between tracks), and not have it go wonky on me... pasting in the wrong take lane and usually atop other data.
 
I know how to cut and paste, I know how to paste special, to specify "Slide over to Make room".  I use to do multitrack (usually the entire project) cut and paste to quickly demo changes in song order - like moving an extra chorus etc.  I used to do this freely early on in the X series.
 
Now it works sometimes, but the more complex a project is, the less it works.  And I am not even talking about trying to cut and past in a region effect like Melodyne.  I get that that may not work.
