Playback is playing but there is not output sound

I am using a MOTU 828x audio interface and I am running Windows 8.1. I am able to record from my Yamaha MO8 keyboard but when I press playback in Sonar I am not hearing any sound. I've checked the outputs in Sonar and they area assigned to the MOTU Main Outputs. I set the default audio device for Windows to use the MOTU Main Outputs. Is there another setting that I am missing?

Thanks in advance,
Joe

    Welcome to the forum!
Are you recording MIDI or audio? Does the tracks level meter move while playing back?
What driver mode are you using? Motus own ASIO drivers?

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

I assume you mean the Master Bus Output assignment...

I set the default audio device for Windows to use the MOTU Main Outputs.
This should not be required, and may even be the cause if Windows is trying to take control of the Motu.  It would also make your Windows system sounds come from your studio monitors..

Use your computer's onboard sound as the Windows default and leave the Motu for Sonar.  If you want Windows sounds through your studio monitors (iTunes, YouTube, etc) connect the output of your onboard sound to a spare input on the Motu.

I was able to figure it out. I did not have my Yamaha usb-midi drivers installed on my new PC. It's been awhile since I've done this. I set the I/O to the Yamaha and I am getting sound now. I get confused between MIDI and USB MIDI. All I want to do is record tracks from my Yamaha and Roland SH-201 and be able to play those tracks back while I play the Yamaha live.

MIDI is MIDI, USB or not. If you send the recorded MIDI from SONAR to your Yamaha, then the MIDI is played with Yamahas sounds. If you use softsynths, their sounds are used inside SONAR. In those cases you can change the sounds after recording. If you record audio from Yamaha, then the sound is fixed and cannot be changed.

Thanks Kalle. I get that MIDI is MIDI I guess my confusion comes in with the audio interface. I have a MIDI cable going from my Yamaha to the Motu audio interface which is connected to the PC via USB. I also have a USB cable going from Yamaha to my PC. I thought I could use the Motu as the I/O for cakewalk since there is a MIDI cable going to it from my Yamaha and the PC is connected to the Motu. In any case, it is working.
Speaking of SoftSynths I tried laying down a track using a SoftSynth and my Yamaha as the control surface but I was getting the Yamaha sound AND the softsynth at the same time. How do I fix that?

Disable the Audio input from the Yamaha, you need Midi only (which you assign to the soft synth)
