Delete single beat and slide all events

I'm trying to remove a single beat from one bar in the middle of a track, and I'm having some troubles, I am familiar with the delete which can slide all the events+automation when you want to remove a whole bar but is there a way to do the same with a single beat?

Hello Guys,

I have been experiencing the same thing for the last few months but didn't realize it until last week that the delete Hole hasn't been sliding all tracks.  It appears that it is only sliding audio tracks but not midi tracks.  Again, before I thought this may have been user error but now I'm quite certain it's a s/w glitch.

I'm not actively working on a project this week but if anyone has the time to double check this, please take a normal project that has a mix of both audio and midi data and in Event View select all tracks then set your now-time marker anywhere in the project and the related measures that you want to delete across all of the tracks.  Then select Delete Special and make sure to delete hole.  The correct behavior would be fore the project to slide everything (audio and midi) from that point and the corresponding measures you selected and fill the gap that was deleted.  I think you'll find that it slid everything except midi tracks, causing a mismatch of track events.  The only work around would be to delete track by track which is time consuming.

Most of the documented reports I've read about Delete Hole not working have reached the conclusion that it will only move tracks that actually have data "in the hole". The distinction between Audio & Midi is irrelevant.

Hopefully this will be addressed with the new Ripple Edit feature which has been promised

This may or may not help but worth a try:

MIDI=Check the end time of notes from the previous measure that may extend into the 'hole' you want to make.
I don't think that note will be truncated nor the hole made. You may need to shorten the length of the MIDI note.
This probably applies to the start times of MIDI notes in the next measure (you want to keep).
I'd take notes on what notes/tracks you do this on so that you can restore to original note length.

If the song is in 4/4 create one bar of 3/4 before the bar in question and fudge it from there.

Due to continuing issues with the Delete Hole option, I recommend you close the gap manually:

- Select all tracks.
- Sweep in the timeline with snap at 1/4 to select the time range.
- Right-click and choose Split, set to 'Split at Selection', and OK.
- Select the split region and Delete Special with everything checked except Delete Hole.
- Select everything to the right and drag to fill the hole with Snap By enabled at 1/4.

If you have automation and tempo/meter changes in the region, you might need to create some new automation nodes around the section to be deleted, and do the move by Cut Special-Paste Special to make sure everything moves.

Also, if there are any MIDI notes crossing the split boundaries, you should either edit them in advance, or decide whether or not to use Non-destructive MIDI Editing when splitting. With it enabled, notes will be truncated at the boundaries by slip-editing; without it, notes will get deleted in their entirety.

The Delete Hole bug has been around for a very long time. The only way it works is if you have clips on every track in the hole you want to delete. I keep a folder on my PC that has clips for audio and MIDI that are 4 beats long that I specifically use for deleting holes. If I only need to delete 1 beat, then I just slip edit the clips.

I split all the tracks where I want to delete the hole and then slip edit them so all the tracks are blank in the hole. Then I drag and drop the audio and MIDI clips from my folder to the holes of all the tracks and then slip edit if needed or turn the clips into groove clips if they need to be longer and then Delete hole. This works every time for me.

I've found the best way to work around Delete Hole failing is to just delete the section of a song without attempting to slide anything. Afterwards, I then manually select everything after the hole and drag it forward until it touches the start of where the hole began. Its not perfect, automation is a pain, but its better than the project going out of sync with itself.

Not sure about the OP's original question though. The only way I could think to do it would be to select everything in the midi track from that point forward and slide it very carefully to the left to the point where I wanted everything moved. In theory CTRL+ Leftclick would allow me to select multiple midi tracks as many times as needed but its a lot of manual shifting and possiby fraught with the potential for mistakes.

Thanks folks, this helps.  Based on what I'm reading, then as long as I extend the length of the midi and audio clips to at least start from the hole that I want to delete, then the delete hole for all tracks will work.

Thanks again

Yes that should work.

Automation need not be a pain:

Make sure you've got Select Track Envelopes with Clips selected in the Options menu. This is NOT selected in the image above
