Windows 10 start menu died - resolved with Anniv. update

I'm on 10.0.10586 and the start menu died.
It just spontaneously stopped working.
All I recall before that happening was that after some windows update the user account was goofed.  It was logged in with temp!!!?
So I restarted and it looked ok, but now whenever I click the start button, or press the windows key, nothing.
Weird that right click still works, and I can kinda get Cortana to half work if I put focus somewhere else first.  This is how I have to run the 'modern' apps, by typing their name!

Have seen all sorts of crazy suggested fixes, running through the powershell sfc /scannow one at the moment.

This list of fixes seems somewhat reliable.
http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/has-your-windows-10-start-menu-stopped-working-here-are-four-ways-to-fix-it-11364000314532

Anyway, will update when I sort this out.  Maybe I can get the anniversary update installed but if something is messed up in the core, the windows updates might be blocked.  Not how I wanted to spend the end of summer.

[Update1] - after the scan finished, it was unable to 'fix' the issue.
PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> sfc /scannow
Beginning system scan.  This process will take some time.
Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.
Several weird errors in log, opencl.dll mismatch, directories that are not correctly owned
Two examples:

Running the next phase using DISM.

[Update2] grr, DISM didn't fix it either

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 10.0.10586.0
Image Version: 10.0.10586.0

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243077.
The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

From my understanding it's supposed to be using Windows Update to accomplish this repair.  :(
I had recently turned off the option to get windows updates from more than one place (the network sharing thing)

Looks like I might have to do the more disruptive repair install thing, oh well.

    Hi Keith,

Did you uninstall any apps that were pinned to the Start Menu?

Not that I recall.  I had hidden Cortana and turned off OneDrive.  Those actions may have been a factor.

There is an update to Win 10 (Anniversary Update).  I would suggest getting the update (it slightly changes the start menu) as it will likely fix it.

Cortana is not the problem.  I had Cortana disabled on that version and everything still worked.

It happened to me some time ago. Went through the fixes in that link but stopped before new account. Turned Fast Boot off. Cold started and the menus were back. Have not turned Fast Boot back on.

Doesn't show when I do check for updates.  Maybe I need to turn on the more than one place option again.

Thanks, at this point, I'm trying to install the anniversary update.  For all the forced Windows 10 updates, I was surprised that I was not able to get the anniversary update!  I had to click the link in updates for more info on latest updates, then click the link on the web page that mentioned the anniversary update, download that installer, and run it.  Hope this fixes things.

FWIW, I do those things regularly (with many different builds).
Thus far, they've not resulted in broken Start Menu.

We had one client where this happened (shortly after he uninstalled some apps that were pinned to the Start Menu).
We created a new User Account... then deleted the original.

good idea if there's no user data to save, tho docs and such can be copied easily
another idea if you're mid-anniversary-update, let that finish, then update the **** out of that, maybe it'll come back... maybe...
    good luck!

Anniversary update is now installed and the start menu is back!
Did take about an hour to update, but it finally finished.

I have disabled Cortana and One Drive, plus turned off and uninstalled as many of the live tiles as possible.  No problems here.

Since the sfc /scannow test found corrupt files and could not repair them, there are apparently corrupt system files on your PC.

If it were my computer, i would do this next:
    1. Locate a recent system restore point and try rolling back to that.
    2. If no functional restore point is available or the restore did not fix the problem, I would shoot for a "refresh" of Windows 10.  The first level only resets system files, and leaves your programs and data.  This can be accessed from within a running copy of Windows, or from a Windows recovery disk (or drive).

Glad to hear you got it sorted out!  The Windows Anniversary update is like a re-install of Windows, so apparently it replaced all of those broken files for you!
