motu AVB 1248 frustration

having a hell of a time recording with this thing.  can't even get the computer output into the headphones.  that routing grid is freaking confusing.

First thing to remember is that for everything NON-DAW related (YouTube, foobar2000, etc) The From Computer 1 and 2 along the top are your friends.
So simply click the Phones L to Computer 1 and Phones R to Computer 2 and that should solve that problem.
Make it match the MainL and MainR (along the left side) that is already set up in the default configuration.

For everything else, take a look at their videos.

Spend some time working with the routing options.
It's deep and a bit confusing at first... but you'll soon get the hang of it.

Did you see my post here? To ensure that changes to the routing are indeed applied you must not have playback running ... so best decide on your routing before you go into Sonar or start it from Sonar - Preferences - Audio ...

I did see that.  And I think the scenario I described is caused exactly by that.  When I assign the mic somewhere else I lose it in my headphone

That shouldn't be the case - my "issue" was that whatever I assigned in the routing tab did not get applied because I had Sonar locking it somehow ... but if you got headphone sound before, you should have it afterwards, unless the "dots" for headphone routing get removed when you click in the routing matrix ... I meanwhile have come a long way digging this routing, so if you post pictures what of your routing tab, we might be able to help you better ...

one thing that might make it easier is to disable those outputs that you don't need (SPDIF? ADAT? some analog outs?) which makes the routing matrix much smaller ...

In my control panel I see 2 motu pro audio devices.  Motu Pro Audio out 1-2 Default Device and Motu Pro Audio Out 1-24 Default communication device.
In device manager I see Motu Pro Audio under sound controllers.  The driver version is 4.07.1064
Doe this insure that the latest driver is installed?  And Why 2 devices in control panel?

I did have some success today.  I accessed the motu control through the asio panel in sonar.  I don't know if that made a difference.  But I was able to record and monitor using the motu mixer. I used the interface plus mixer preset.  I still am not confident with it by any means.  but progress

I'd say, just use the "interface only" one - or whatever it's called. Then you just get simple routing in the MOTU, and use SONAR for everything else.

I'm no expert at this - and I think it's pretty confusing too, but I'd just use SONAR for my "mixer" unless you have a real need to use anything in the MOTU (then you'll definitely have to RTFM)

    er - that's it I think...

yes that's the way to go for using the AVB with your DAW - unless you are doing multiple low latency headphone mixer for several musicians (but in that case it's RTFM plus getting very familiar with not just the routing but also the DSP effects)

I got this reply from MOTU re: the "out 1-24" device
""Out 1-24" are for non-ASIO compliant programs that require more than stereo outputs.  They have been a number of requests on supporting this format, so we decided to add it in."
