Kenny,

Some killer jazz riffs there. Outside my understanding, but clue that there is hope.

Many thanks for you sharing.

Hey John ,

Here's a laid back finger style thing where you can see the right hand and what it's doing
every thing I did was pretty much mentioned in my other post ...

Kenny

Nice! And I have to say, that's pretty similar to my jazz/blues finger style!

And after all the clever stuff, a man who's gone from "who's he?" to heaps of praise, awards, recognition and respect over the last three or so years. R'n'B as it used to be.

The technique might look brutally basic, and is. Except that he's the uncanny ability to sound like two or three guitarists at the same time.

It is a pity the song is so boring.  Sounds like a poor version of Angus from AC/DC to me.  But yeah it sounds like two guitar riffs are going on there.  I assume he must be using a pick though to get that chunky sound.

I think I would much rather listen to Kenny though.  Nice work Kenny.

No pick, all fingers, and around well before AC/DC.

Can't do either at the moment.

About 5 weeks ago I slammed the car door onto my forefinger and the nail blackened within a couple of days.
The last week or so it's slowly starting to detach itself from my finger, so you can imagine the pain!!

Midi only for me at the moment

would never use a very thin & soft pick that bends a lot during playing, those sound real nasty imo.
strong/solid picks are ok imo.

This thread has me thinking about making a few short u tube vids about getting good at finger style guitar playing with out having to jump through all the BS and rhetoric that's currently out there on the tube ...

Good idea Kenny, go for it. Anything that helps explain that there are other musically interesting ways to play a guitar than a hundred notes a second ultra-gain shredding is always a good idea.

Re: To Pick or Not to Pick 2016/09/14 19:00:24 (permalink)
I find picks to be an impediment.  I have not used a pick in so long that if I try to use one I toss it against the wall after 4 bars or less.  I have a quart jar full of picks.  It sits on my night stand as a relic.

I do not want to learn how to use a pick.  I do not have the time left, and I play what I play....for me.  The worst thing when I did use picks, was when I couldn't find one, or the one I did find was split (which can actually yield some cool results,) or it was the wrong gauge or texture.

But what I want is only for me.  I am amazed at players who can use picks; amazed to tears.  I think if you want to be an all around player, one whom people seek to contribute, you better be able to swing both ways.

I hope to get a video out there soon on this topic ....
Today I set up to do one and I guess it just wasn't meant to be ...
what can I do other than laugh ?...every thing wrong that could have happened .....happened

After setting up the camera and getting the right focus the guy in the house next door to me starts mowing his lawn and running the weed whacker ....
I shut all my windows , grab an electric guitar figuring I can just run that into SONAR ..then the guitar decides it doesn't want to stay in tune for me ...
I wind up taking out my pedal board figuring I can just tune inline instead of having to stop unplug and tune the way I normally do ...No matter what I do to get with it ..... it just keeps getting and better
Then when I finally get it together a mechanic  shows up to my place to help me fix my car after he had told me 2 hours beforehand  that he cant do it until tomorrow ....
I finally gave up ...my mamma told me I would have days like these
