In the category of "Um, ok..." here's another list!

A list of underrated guitarists!  No surprises to me except that most seem to be pretty well known as badass guitarists.  Maybe they're referring to the unwashed masses?

Exactly.

Mind you, some on that list are overrated...

... in my honest opinion, of course.

Just another list, like the mindless TV Music Award shows, but I will give it some respect for including Lindsey Buckingham, who does not seem to make the top A-lister guitarists lists. I guess he is more attributed for being a performer and songwriter. But the reality is he is a very accomplished and tasteful guitarist and merits this underrated recognition at a minimum.

Why Matk Knopfler is on this underrated list is a major question mark? Personally, and I can't believe I am speaking just for myself, he is a true A-lister guitarist and is recognized as such. Underrated? Oh well, it is just another list and someone's opinion.

Broken pencils are pointless.

WIN-7 64-bit; Sonar X2A 64-bit; 12GB RAM; ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 MB; Intel Core i7-960; 300GB-OS (10000-RPM); 1TB-Projects (7200-RPM); 1TB-Samples (7200-RPM)

For my list I'd have Steve Bartek (of Strawberry Alarm Clock and Oingo Boingo fame) and not just because I'm a member of his forum.  But, because he fits himself into the song and doesn't showcase his talent, you'll rarely hear people talk about him.

As for my most underrated guitarist in the U.S., that would definitely have to be my bud Walter Trout.  He sells out arenas in Europe and was listed in the top-5 of best guitarists over there (with the other usual suspects) but is almost unheard of over here!

Likewise David Rhodes who's played with Peter Gabriel for decades. Dave Gregory too, one of the classiest un-sung guitarists ever. Then there's Dominic Miller...

Good to see Rory Gallagher in the vid, the guy was a beast!
Mark Knopfler? The guy has never been unrated.

To be honest though, many of these I wouldn't class as "underrated."

I was thinking more on the lines of Danny Gatton, the "world's best unknown guitarist."

Hi,

My take on this is that too much of this is stuff that is more commercially appreciated than the rest of the stuff out there. There are many roles for the guitar that are not enjoyed by many folks, and in the end, we're comparing apples to oranges and I find this sad, since it hurts the ability of people getting a better idea of what the guitar can really do in various settings, many of which are not pop songs and just blues affiliated material.

I can't help feeling that this is just a commercial pitch for the same thing to convince you that there is nothing else out there in music. And that's a shame!

You'll never be able to create a Symphony for a guitar, or a true Concerto for a guitar and place it in a more interesting place than a rock/pop song.

Missed on the list for me:
Mike Oldfield
John Weinzierl (AD2)
Michael Karoli (late CAN guitarist)
Toni McPhee (Groundhogs)
David Clark Allen (Carmen)
Richard Thompson
Egberto Gismonti
Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna)
...
that will do for starters within 5 minutes!

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I don't think it's that. It's just a lazy list thrown together.

Missed on the list for me:
Mike Oldfield

When has he ever been under-rated? He's been lauded as a guitarist since he was about 17......and
please don't wheel out the SallyAngie/Barefoot/Kevin Ayers stuff again Pedro, I know my rock history, OK?

Here's another inexplicable list from WatchMojo, top ten underrated bands...

Soundgarden, OK I can accept that, at least outside Seattle where they're legends. The Kinks, definitely.

But Deep Purple? ZZ Top? Really? These are rock royalty.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
