Developers: PLEASE fix this:

The snap functions in staff view do not work and haven't worked in many releases.

When I choose a note I expect the snap to adjust to that note value; so if I choose an eighth note, when placing that note on the staff I expect the grid to snap to the nearest eighth note.  But this doesn't happen, every note value snaps to a 32nd note position, which means a lot of time wasted moving the note to where it actually belongs.  For decades the snap function in Sonar worked correctly and as expected.  And yes, of course I have submitted reports using the problem reporter.  Please repair this!

Thanks,
Jerry Gerber

I've passed this along, hopefully it's a simple fix.

I just upgraded to Sonar Professional after having used Cakewalk Pro 9 for more than 10 years, and I'm very upset to find out that the Snap function doesn't work anymore in the Staff view... I do all my arrangements in the Staff view! The absence of the Snap function really makes entering notes directly in the correct rhythm a nightmare and kills my productivity!!! The reason why I decided to upgrade to Sonar is that I'm very much used to the Cakewalk Staff interface, which I always found basic but very practical. If I knew this in advance I certainly would not have bought Sonar Professional. I expected the program to have improved, not detoriated from previous versions! Developers please fix this!!!! It can't be too hard, it was implemented in previous versions!

    Jerry,

I want to make sure I understand what you think the expected behavior should be.

For example, selecting the quarter note would set snap to quarter notes, and allow quarter notes to only be inserted exactly on beats 1, 2, 3 or 4 (assuming 4/4 time signature.) Is that what you are expecting?

Wouldn't this mean it would be impossible to enter the quarter note on the "and" of any beat unless snap was disabled? Syncopation would be much more difficult!

Perhaps what you really want is to be able to set the snap (separately from the note value) to the smallest value you will need for the time being. A snap default of 32nd notes allows a lot of flexibility (unless you need 64th notes), but requires the user to be very accurate when placing the notes, so I can see how most of the time it would be better to be able to set the snap at eighth or sixteenth notes, or whatever is appropriate at the moment.

Yes, exactly.   There should be two options for snap:  1) the snap follows the note value, 2) the snap doesn't follow the note value but can be set to a value that does what you wrote about above.   As you mentioned, sometimes you'll want to enter a quarter note not on the beat, but a quarter or half a beat later or earlier.  In that case you'd want to be able to either set the snap to a smaller value, i.e. a 16th, 32nd or 8th note.
