How to create a MIDI track not assigned to any VSTi on my rack?
Hi friends, How can I create a MIDI track which is not assigned to any VSTi loaded on my synth rack? If I create a MIDI track and after that I load a VSTi the MIDI track will be automatically directed to this VSTi! Thank you very much

I created a new MIDI track which was assigned to my USB MIDI out port. Then I added a VST synth (Strum GS-2) and the MIDI track remained assigned to my USB MIDI out port rather than a the VST synth.
The method I used to create the VST synth is to use the browser and add the synth
I cannot replicate what you have described. Can describe in exact detail how you go about adding your VST synth.

If you are saying you want to have a MIDI track that is not assigned to a synth, then just do not use the Synth Rack or an instrument track. Insert a MIDI track, and import existing MIDI data or assign an input if you want to record a controller. If you want to hear the output, you will of course need to assign the output of the MIDI track to something that makes audio data, and the output of whatever is making the audio to an audio track. In the old days there was no such thing as an instrument track and SONAR worked fine without them.

Ok my friends, I just want to see the muted MIDI track content of previous recorded material running and follow on the Staff view in order to play with another vsti. It will be my music track guide to perform on top of it. I will play on a small concert and I need to view staff sheet running while I am playing/improvising on another synth. If I assign the MIDI track to a VSTi there will be no reason for playing live understand? I have found an alternative way though, I solo the others tracks and mute that one, but anyway there must be a way of creating a MIDI track with MIDI data on it not assigned to any VSTi. I Think. LOL Thank you for the help my friends.

If I create a MIDI track and after that I load a VSTi the MIDI track will be automatically directed to this VSTi! Yes and isn't that what you'd expect the software to do?. It can only assume that if those two actions take place that this is what you where trying to do. Insert a midi track and then insert a synth to output sound for that track while you record. For the life of me a cannot think of a situation where I would insert a new midi track, then insert a synth and not want the midi track to be assigned to that synth. Mostly I work the other way around and I set up a few synth in the rack first, then I'll start adding midi tracks. It's just a workflow enhancement. 99% of the times it is what we want. I don't think the older versions did this. It takes 4-5 seconds to change the output of a midi track to the synth you want or even send the track out a midi port to an outboard hardware synth.

Have you tried right clicking in the track view (on the left side) and choosing "insert midi track"? Also, if you go to the plus sign up top, you can insert a midi track that is not assigned to any VST. Choose instrument/midi only/no input. That should be good to go. It shouldn't attach itself to any added VSTs (mine doesn't).

arlen2133 Also, if you go to the plus sign up top,
Where is this plus sign? I know that we can insert a MIDI track without any Vsti on right pane row but then if you add a Vsti latter on it will be assigned to that empty MIDI track. But it is ok, I will mute/solo those tracks and I will arrange myself with this. Thank you very much you all Sonar friends. Best Regards

The plus sign is in the track view (one of SPLATs newest features). Its for "add a track".. Not sure how to add a screen shot of it here.. Trying to figure out now..
