Default Directory in Platinum
Before I upgraded form Sonar x3 producer to PlatiThnum, when I started a new project the create new project pop up would give me an option to Store Project audio in its own Folder. That doesn't appear in Platinum. I liked the way x3 did that as I could always keep everything under that project. I have looked for a way to do this in Platinum under options, but can't find it. I assume there is a way or something I am missing. Can someone please assist me. Thank You!

Hi. If you choose new from File, New, it will open default Template. IIRC, this was introduced when the Start Screen was introduced, and allowed for creating new project, without having to name, or choose folder location. Hope it helps. All the best.

I just created 5 new projects, with the first using New From Template, the 2nd using New Project, the 3rd using File>New, the 4th using ALT+F then N, and the 5th using CTRL+N, to see what each option did with audio. 1) Start Screen 'New Project' option - The project created from the Start Screen's 'New Project' option does NOT default to use Per Project Audio, and saves audio to C:\Cakewalk Projects\Audio. Doing a Save As presents the audio path for MANUAL modification, but any audio created prior to modifying that goes to the path listed above. If you want to use Per Project Audio - I would not use this option. 2) File>New option - Creating a project using File>New behaves differently, and DOES present the path for the Audio to be stored in an Audio sub-folder - as the new default for Sonar has Per Project Audio turned on. The path for the Audio sub-folder is automatically populated to create a folder called Audio within the project folder, so as you type the name of the project, the path for the Audio sub-folder is modified to include whatever you are naming the project as the parent folder for the Audio sub-folder. (because Per Project Audio is on by default). This option is fine for creating projects with Per Project Audio automatically on. 3) Start Screen 'New From Template option - Creating a new project by choosing 'New From Template' on the Start Screen, ALSO presents the path for creating an Audio sub-folder within the project folder, and automatically adds the project folder name to the path to the Audio sub-folder (just like File>New does). This option is fine for creating projects with Per Project Audio automatically on. 4) ALT+F then N works the same way that File>New works, resulting in an Audio sub-folder within the project folder, and the path is automatically populated as you type in the project name. This option is fine for creating projects with Per Project Audio automatically on. 5) CTRL+N option - this does NOT work like File>New. You will NOT have an Audio sub-folder created. It will default to the global Cakewalk Projects\Audio folder, though you can change that path during Save As. Audio clips created prior to a path modification to its default will indeed be stored in the global Cakewalk Projects\Audio folder. If Per Project Audio is desired, I would not suggest using this option. For whatever the worth, I ALWAYS start new projects using the Start Screen 'New From Template' option, and I always end up with an automatically created Audio sub-folder, within the main project folder, and all of my audio clips are properly stored within the Audio sub-folder, as a result of the default Per Project Audio option in Platinum. I hope the above helps to explain why things act differently between the different ways you can start a new project. Bob Bone

Actually - the File>New option will open the New Project File dialog box, in which you DO provide the project name, and it will add that project name to the path for the Audio sub-folder within the project folder (Per Project Audio is used). I explain each method of creating a new project, and its effect on whether or not Per Project Audio is used, in my earlier post. Bob Bone

In addition, including that post in the Sonar User's Manual would be very helpful as this question comes up fairly often.

Robert's analysis is very helpful. So I found this thread because I just realized a bunch of my audio for multiple projects are all in the same global audio folder, and for my purposes this is a tangled mess. Robert's analysis helps going forward, but is there a way to sort out which audio files go with which project, and move them back into the appropriate Project Audio subfolder; and if so will the audio files still be recognized when I open the project?

You could just use the 'file >Save a copy as' function and check 'copy all audio' and 'create one file per clip' to save the projects with their own audio folders. It is very quick, and once done you can delete the audio in the global folder.

Thanks Bruce - very helpful! I think this is what you're looking for: https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=FileManagement.5.htmlThis shows how to change the location of the single global audio file, but I didn't see how to re-capture the audio files to their proper audio subfile within each project folder. So what would be the benefit of having all audio files from all projects lumped together in a single global folder - why is this the default now? At least to my way of thinking, it makes more sense to have them all in their own subfolders for each project - whether those audio subfolders existed in a global audio folder, or within an audio folder within the project's folder (as used to be the default.) But I'm not seeing the benefit of dumping them all in one place...

Hey Morgan. IIRC Sonar only defaults to the global folder if you create a new project and start to work on it without giving it a name. If you create the new project and name it as a part of that process I believe it will default to its own audio folder inside the project folder.

Hmmm... not sure that's been the case for me. My first step is always to name it when starting a new project before doing anything - but perhaps it's related to the project template I'm starting from that creates that environment before I name it.

Hey Morgan. Maybe so - you just need to make sure the first time you save/name the project that the 'copy all audio with project' and 'create one file per clip' checkboxes in the save dialogue box are ticked. You will then see the project and audio path below. There is another advantage to using per project audio files inside the project folder: the location of the audio files referenced becomes relative rather than absolute. This means that as long as the audio folder stays inside the project folder, you can move that project folder wherever you like (including another drive) and Sonar will still find all of the tracks.

Very helpful - thanks. I agree on the per-project audio files. That's what I have always done, somewhere along the way recently I accidentally began using the global audio file. Definitely keep my eyes open on this going forward.
