Slip into the Night

Just sang this one while playing the guitar. That's it, at least so far. Well, that's about all there is to say about it, I guess, except I hope someone likes it :)

Thanks very much, bitflipper. I'm (I think I'm) hoping to make a full production of this ....

Thank you, too, jamesyoyo. McCartney is a such a great musician - it's sweet to hear I could play something that would bring him to someone's mind in some way.

Hi Beagle and thanks for your comment and question.

I was using an mxl (dual-sided) v67. I agree that it sounds kind of  squashed and odd here, especially with initial consonants of a few of the words near the beginning of the song.

Most likely it wasn't the mike, but that I probably messed up and accidentally had my Octa-Capture on some weird setting.

But I managed to get a kind of decent take first shot singing and playing the guitar simultaneously so I was happy and relieved. I thought I'd try to get by with what I had in that take and hope that nobody noticed the kind of crummy vocal sound.

Lazy, or just plain afraid I couldn't make it all the way through again without a major mistake. Guess I should have made some adjustments and tried again.

Thanks again, all, for taking the trouble to listen and comment!

    Hi Laura,
just a point of information which might be a problem and might not - I own an MXL V67M and they're not "dual sided."  the V67 is a Cardioid patttern side address condenser mic.

basically those are a lot of big words to say that the pick up pattern for the mic is not "directional" but has the biggest pickup directly in front of it when it's "standing upright"

so you want to sing into the side where the "V67" is facing you like this:

the back side of the mic WILL pick up your voice, but it will be greatly reduced volume and probably will have some artifacts because of being on the back of the cardioid pattern.  and since it is greatly reduced volume you'll need to crank up the mic preamp on the octo which will also cause artifacts to add to the signal.

the cardioid pattern is like this:

the "firing line" in the above pic is the FRONT of the mic as shown on the V67 mic front above.

so, you might not be doing it wrong, but since you said "dual sided" - I wanted to make sure you understood that the mic is actually not dual sided and the pickup on the front of the mic will be where you can read "V67" and if you're not singing directly into the front, you get different pickup "sounds" but if you're on the 90 degree off axis you'll have odd artifacts and if you're at the back of the mic you'll have even higher artifacts in the recording.

Hi again, Beagle ... Thank you so much for going to all that trouble! And I think you hit it on the head: I probably did have the mic turned funny ... the cradle kept falling apart, so in frustration, I cleverly  taped the mic to the stand so thoroughly that I can no longer even see much of it, so it's possible it was facing any which way!

Also, I'm ashamed to admit that I neglected to give you one letter in the mic's name: it's an MXL V67i , which has a dual diaphragm and has a Warm/Bright switch. So it's not dual-sided, as I inaccurately said. I think of it as dual-sided because of the switching feature. I guess it must have been set to "Warm" because I'm certainly not very "Bright" lately!

Anyway, now I'll be much more careful about singing directly into the front (if I ever figure out where the logo is under all that tape).

    Thanks a million, Beagle!

To Jesse Screed - It's truly an honour to hear that you bookmarked my SC song list. I'm very very grateful and hope not to abuse your ears too often! Thank you so much for your kindness. :)

To fjz and Walt Collins - Thank you both very much for your kind words. It means a lot when people take their valuable time and choose the words that give other people a lift. :)

I'm hoping to get enough time tomorrow at long last to start listening to what everybody here's been up to the last couple of weeks. I've been really missing hearing all of your music.  I can't wait.... now if my work (job-for-money) will only cooperate!

    Thanks again,

Ah - OK!  I didn't even know those "i" versions existed!  but yeah, singing off axis is OK and is actually good sometimes, but not TOO far off axis or you'll get weird sounds.

    good luck!

beautiful anyhow. you don't sing like most people- it's a quiet jazzlike quality.

I think this song is well suited to a simple guitar/vocal arrangement so I wouldn't go too overboard with a "full production" version.  Maybe you could start it off very much like it is, then bring in other instruments half way through.  Whatever you decide...very nice song.

    Very nice song.

Yeah there's some nits with the vocal quality, but time will work that out.

    The guitar sounds pretty nice.

I know there's a certain feel that's obtained from a spontaneous live recording, but you might want to investigate using multitrack with 2 sessions to record this again.... one for the guitar by itself... then go back and record the vocals in a different take.

A nice crisp vocal take would put this over the top. To my ears, the vocal should have been a bit more prominent in the mix than it was.

I enjoyed it ....always pleasant to hear your voice and all your twists and turns in your song journeys ;o) ....thx for sharing.   I agree with most points noted....though for my taste its fine as it is...though I certainly agree with the idea of laying down the guitar track and the vocals separate for better post fiddling ability.
....Oh....I also feel sorry for the fool that would want to sneak away from such a pleasant gal ;o)

This is a nice song Laura.

I only have one minor comment, which can be taken with a pinch of salt really, especially from someone that wouldn't know where to start with something like this.

With it just been one guitar and one vocal, I would have perhaps stuck them both much closer to centre.

    But that's just me

    cheers

Nice chord progression + melody....   It sounds like you, of course.   Not much to add to the above regarding the recording or mix, other than the panning did seem a bit odd.   But by the end it didn't.    Huh.
