It wasn't an issue for my teachers.

The first hand calculator I ever saw was when I was taking a quantitative analysis course five years after graduating from high school and some rich kid showed up with a machine the size of a book that he had paid a month's wages for that could add subtract multiply and divide to two more places than I could estimate on my ten inch log log slide rule.

Today I carry one whenever I want to do even the simplest math, because both me and my flip phone are too stupid to do even that.

A couple of mine in Madison, finally said ... please stop swearing in Portuguese ... and teach the kids! So I did it some more!

Even got suspended from school for a sit-in we organized the day after MLK was shot. The flag was flying full and we asked it to be lowered and the principal declined. 300 of us were suspended that week, and when it got to the newspapers, it wasn't pretty. The principal was fired 3 weeks later!

This sort of reminds me of when I was in college and my dad insisted I take CALCULUS (I was a psychology/philosophy major).  I asked him why and he told me, "You'll use it every day for the rest of your life."  One of the things he was totally wrong about.

Maybe he got it confused with MICROWAVING?  A common mistake.

Oh wait, you said you were a psychology/philosophy major - my bad.  He probably confused it with GETTING UNEMPLOYMENT.

This is the first calculator I remember having in our house. I'm pretty sure you had to plug it in. I remember tapping away at the keys thinking I was some kind of astronaut.

We had one of those too. They were too cool!

I still have a scientific TI calculator that I use occasionally. Have you seen the current crop? While they may be replaced with apps, the new dedicated calcs are incredible.

Back OT, anyone remember getting paddled? And the shop teachers having paddles that looked like a thick butcher block with holes drilled in it? The PE coach using his whistle leash? I guess that may be just me.

I remember the boards with holes.  Our principal in grade school had one with Board of Education on it!

Ohhhhh yeah....

Had one teacher in elementary school (6th grade) that had a long thin piece of wood.  He wasn't my normal teacher, but we had him one day when ours was out and he slammed that thing on my desk right on my knuckles because I was daydreaming.  My first reaction was to break the damn thing.  Hellllooo Mr. Principal, yeah, it's me again!

I I would have told them (and DID once! At UCSB, too!)) .... that teachers like them would never know or see a future where things were different! And they were not helping prepare us for it!

Calculators tend to ruin some good, immature jokes though...
