I AM WHAT I AM- New Collab Featuring Bapu, Marcos69 and Daryl1968

I actually wrote this song quite a long time ago, but figured it was time for some updating.  With the able help of my talented music buddies we've managed to give it a new lease on life.  Give a listen and see what you think.  The players:
Ed (Bapu) Kocol- Bass
Mark (Marcos69) Wessels- Lead guitar
Daryl (Daryl1968) Greenway- Backing vocals
Phil (Philz) Doyle)- All the other stuff and production

Top song on my Soundcloud page: https://soundcloud.com/phil-doyle-292979186/i-am-what-i-am
or if you prefer on top at SoundClick too: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=1050818&content=music

Thanks for listening.

With the start, I immediately thought of John Stewart's classic homage to California, "Gold".

Nice creamy lead at 2:15. Wish I could play like that!

    Loved the ending!

Good sound.  I did flash on Al Stewart in the beginning.  I like the feel of this tune.  Good collab by all.  Hey, Mark, how the heck you been?  Haven't talked for awhile!  Good to hear your work!

    Good songwriting, Phil!

Neil Young meets Paul Buchanan of the Blue Nile! MAybe? This is a seriously good mix, I've rarely heard clearer. Great separation between the instruments! And they all seem balanced just right, nothing pokes out for me.

The long held vocal note around 2:00 might need the same kind of treatment/support that the ones have at the end of the song.

    awesome! thanks for sharing it.

cool little song. for me vocal sounds a bit disconnected to the rest of the instrumentation, the verb is the issue I think, it seems to have very narrow reflections like you're in the bathroom - (maybe you are?) - don't think the slapback effect is what this song needs.
otherwise production is epic, lovely lead playing

Agree with the Al Stewart meets Neil Young references. While I think this is a really nice, clear mix, I think the vocals are pushed too far back and the echo makes it worse. I'd suggest pushing up the vocal and maybe using a diffused ping pong delay to wrap the vocal around the soundstage. Really nice guitar work in this as well.

Listening to "You're Never Too Old..." right after, you can hear that this was mixed by a different person. Some overall compression would help lift the song's energy up a notch...just don't squish it.

    Regards,
    Dan

Very slick mix Phil, nice lead tone on the guitar Mark.  It comes across well here plenty of space in the mix nice balance.  Thanks for sharing.

Yowza, I could live on the nutrition this mix provides, lots of chewy goodness here. Great song too, but I agree with the comments on the vocals, a little buried and the reverb is a bit too much for my taste for this song. Overall this song is a clinic in how to do a mix. Thanks for this one!

Great performances by all of you! Liked everything about the keyboard riff in the beginning - sound, play, harmony changes that loops back really well with the melody. Beautiful solo guitar as well.

The title caught my attention right away.  I like the way the electric guitar comes in and out.  This is a fun track.  The echo on the lead is cool.  I like the lyrics and the vocals.

Great mix...  as already mentioned the separation is terrific.  Everything has its place.  Love the guitar work too, really nice and fluid.     But for me, I also think that the vocal effect is a bit distracting, as though it's slightly flanged or chorused (or double tracked?)...  I think there's so much solidity in the instruments that it stands out a bit.    Otherwise, nice job.

Nice tune.  You guys work well together.  I worked with Mark before and it is always a great experience.  Great lead player and Bapu's bass has a sweet tone.  I did imagine a bit of Neil Young.  Godd song production, guys.
