Let's get back to the topic of typical guitar players. Let's take a poll!

In the old days, and I do mean old, distortion was bad. The only strings available were Black Diamond and no 3rd unwound G strings. All the amps I got to play on were cheap and distorted no matter what you did. But to me they sounded good. Later a few years and I bought a recorded and learned to over dub. I found that when playing with other instruments in the recordings the distortion didn't come out that way but more like a violin sound. It cut but sounded good. Now days unless it's something like Autumn leaves I prefer distortion on a melody because I can get a vocal quality out of the sound. What do you guys think?

With distortion comes sustain, naturally. Easier for legato playing, nice for top line melodies. Depends on the type of tune though. Sometimes it's all in the left (or right) hand vibrato, clean sounds can work too.

In one small paragraph, James pretty much covers everything!

Did I write something funny?

I Am just a rookie compared to you guys I know so hopefully y'all can tolerate my incompetence, physical and mental short comings plus ignorance. I was recently promoted to Typical Guitarist. I was trying to enjoy that promotion! I Am put back in my place.  Thank you very much

I think I'm still trying to decipher this sentence...

Now that you mention it. There may be a hidden message in that statement. I bought a recorded This looks suspicious to me! What is it being over dub? How do you recorded? Peculiar I think!

You asked what 'you guys' thought Bill. That was what I thought. If you took that as some kind of personal admonishment, I can't help you.

Geetar is a great instrument.  The electric guitar is slightly more fun because one can extend the timbre by adjusting the tone.  Classical guitar is like the cello, it's kind of stuck in that mid rangy...whatever.  Over dubbing is even more fun because one can turn a single geetar into many ala les paul.  Unfortunately, it can also be a very lonely instrument.  For some bizarre reason I woke up singing *down by the lazy river* which was recorded by the osmonds in the 70's.  The song basically says go down by the lazy river, bring your geeter and you'll never be lonely. Should I go sit by the Willamette with my geetar?  Warning this is really froggy:

But you already did! I now know the term personal admonishment! Besides you stated the obvious.

I know what I have found. What have you guys discovered when deciding clean or distorted when there is a choice.

It's kinda funny. NOBODY that actually knows me or who has seen me around here would dare call me Willamette.
You figure out why

Well, I'm an 'obvious' sort of guitar player. If you want an obscure, mystical or cryptic answer, look elsewhere.

I'm talked down to a lot here. When I write something or try to show something the "experts" jump in to provide the real explanation of my info and tell what the real answer and topic is. The great thing for me is all I have to do is go listen to them or find they have nothing posted at all.

Actually Bill, looking for "experts" in the Coffee House is kind of like trying to find becan in a Jewish synagogue.
