Arrr, avast all ye reformed pirates!

When I first started out I had a free copy of Guitar studio came with a Roland keyboard. My son gave me cracked copy of  Sonar 6 and later 7 I also used a crack of Cubase and Wave Lab 5. I liked Sonar so I bought 8.5 for $100  from a fellow studio owner which I later found out it was not legal to own.. So I sort of felt just a tag guilty.
I bought Wave Lab because I used it a lot and as the crack logo said- try before you buy, don't use warze software to make money.  I also started buying all the other software I liked like Nero and Cubase. A reformed Pirate was eye..
I then bought a replacement Roland keyboard which included X1LE,, I stayed with my grey version of 8.5 because of the issues I was reading about the X series. Then X3 came out and my copy of X1LE  gave me an upgrade path to where I am today at less than half the retail price.
And to all those company's I "tried before I bought"  They certainly all got their money from me eventually and I have not use pirated software for a long time now because I now know who to give my money to without qualms.

    Welcome to the forum Paul.
great place to hang out and talk Sonar. you will love it here. best forum I've ever been a part of.
the turn around on asking questions is sometimes instantaneous.
Started on Pro Audio 9, Sonar 8, then Sonar X1 thru X3 and then platinum. it only gets better as time goes on.
You'll hear some complaining here, you'll hear some feel good threads, but most of all, you'll learn a lot from these great members.

    Hope to see you around.

You expect someone else to admit publicly to ripping off Cakewalk for a number of years ?

[ and the subscription path is more expensive than buying outright ]

Hendershott always said he wasn't worried about password protection because if you loved the product, you'd buy it.  I started with CWPA4.

There were upgrades that were pretty bad (IMHO), and this was before trial versions were available.  I bought back in when Sonar1 hit and it was no picnic even though I had my computer built specifically built for a daw and exceeded recommended specs.  Sonar2 & 3 helped enormously.

I stopped for awhile then a friend gave me his copy of Sonar 7, and I completely got back in it and bought 8.5 and everything finally worked flawlessly.  Bought X1 and it was terrible, went to X2 which was a sigh of relief, and then X3e was bullet-proof.

So I had a history of really feeling I'd wasted money (though I did get discounts along the way) and then the "subscription model" came out...

I upgraded to SPLAT outright the 1st year mainly because there was a lot of buzz that it may have been $199 the next year.  I was impressed and content, but the only reason I upgraded this year was because I (oddly) had a lot of Christmas cash.  I really wasn't intending to.  Then the "lifetime membership" thing happened and I bought in for $99.

If Sonar exists 3 years from now all of my bad memories will be expunged, but as it stands they can hit me with the Sonar 7 thing if they want, because I'm extremely content.
