I'm getting a new computer, what do you recommend?

Hey Guys;
I'm not sure where to post this, but I'm planning on getting a new computer in the next few months.  I figure this is the last one for a while, so what do you recommend?

You haven't lived until you've taken the Rorschach.

Try posting in Computers in the Studio Forum too.

I got mine from Scan in the UK who do specialist builds for audio. If you are East of the pond they are worth a look, I am very happy with mine.

Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

Another option is if you're inclined to do so, build it yourself. With a little research, you can customize it to your exact needs/specifications....AND......there's a whole lot of satisfaction in building it yourself. As a hobbyist, I took up the challenge and built mine 3+ years ago......it's been running like a champ since then and very happy.

That being said and if this is for your profession, then Bapu's suggestion (Jim @ studiocat) is your best route.....Jim is THE MAN.

Hi,

If you know someone that can build these things and is comfortable with motherboards, then I suggest you have him build it for you ... and you can get something with a SSD, 32 GB of Memory, a Radiator for a cooler, a great case, a 1 TB hard drive, W10 64-Pro and a GTX970 ... and all of it for under $1600/$1700 dollars these days. A computer that big, or one that is considered a "gaming computer" will cost much more to be this level, and a MAC is prohibitive and not up-gradable when the time comes to add something or other, if needed.

The bigger difference between "music" and "gaming" machines, is ... I don't know ... I am not sure I have a good music machine, but now I will go and check out some of those, but the ones sold on Musician's Friend, or Guitar Center, are no where what my top 2 machines are, and at this time I mostly use them for writing and some occasional World of Warcraft with my neighbor, on Parkinson's, so it keeps his mind busy and occupied with something more positive than just drugs ... and some medical mana!

Probably in the next month or two, I will start doing some music a bit more daily, and have a chance to check what to use and do on my computers. I do know that the big "sound card" from M-Audio is a waste ... because the technology for sound, on a motherboard, is not designed to be a "mixer", and thus, so many ins and outs, are actually a waste!

Not sure how other machines have this configured or done and will be looking at that soon.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GET A "NAME" MACHINE. Their design and updates and this and that are insane, invasive, and will take place at the worst of times. Lastly, if you have one built, make sure you set it up properly. Right after W10 (only use 64bit PRO btw -- nothing else), you must setup your firewall stuff, BEFORE, you even think about a single music anything, and update drivers, Windows and all that first as needed.

This is as much as I know. And I'm not the pro (though I did support for Windows and computers for many years!)

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

 32M of Memory, a 1G hard drive,

Without commenting on the rest, I believe you meant 32 GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive.

Please do yourself a favor and email jim@studiocat.com
Whatever your requirements or price range Jim will make sure you either get the very best bang for the buck DAW money can buy...or the best advice on what alternatives are out there. A more honest and knowledgable fellow you're not likely to encounter. Highly recommended!!

Seeing that the Mac version of Sonar is coming out soon, why not one of these? ;)

My new job has me setting up, working with and fixing a lot of Macs (something I haven't done since they first came out in the 80's).  I must say, although they look nice and are generally lighter than Windows computers, I find their lack of manipulation options to be annoying.  Two fingers to perform a right-click?  A one button mouse?  (I wouldn't want to give up my five button thumb-ball mouse now!)  Too many settings simplified or hidden.  I want MORE abilities, not fewer!

I thought I'd miss the PC-type of mouse on my iMac, but I find that I really don't. But you can always use a traditional mouse  too - I have one hooked up to my MacBook Pro.

There are things I didn't expect and got used to, too - like the fact that the mouse can be used as a surface - a bit like the trackpad on a MacBook - meaning that you can swipe horizontally and vertically. Makes navigating a lot more efficient.

I find that the advantages by far outweigh the lack of a second button - and ctrl-clicking isn't all that bad, since i pretty much have one hand on the keyboard, anyway.

I'd miss the trackpad functionality a lot more than I ever missed a two/three button mouse, tbh.  I know touchscreen are all the craze, but to me, a trackpad makes more sense and combines the best of both worlds. But to each his own. :)

One of those?  I want a matching set just like yours.  Those are the coolest lamps ever.

Grabbed those at Homegoods. Glad I did, or, more precisely, glad that my wife forced me to get them. They had those 2 and I never saw others like them again.
