new original "Change My Avatar"

Hi everyone,

Here's a new original . . . It's called "Change My Avatar" or maybe "I Changed My Avatar."

I'd love some mix help and crits. Especially if someone could talk me out of the steel drums in the beginning.

The mix sounds nice here Tom, as to the steel drums and persuading you out of them there are a number of Wookiee methods that could be applied, fortunately they are all painless for me

I do like and the lyrics are amusing.

Tom, if you can't post the lyrics please send Daryl some better speakers.

And please, drop the steel drums.

love this funky tune, it is very cool. mix is good, lovely use of different keyboard tones. vocals are perfect too.
the guitar sounds a bit early at times, i get you're pushing the rhythm but there's doing that and there's out of time. apart from that loving it

Cool idea -- good demo of this -- I like the 70s sound mixed in with some early New Wave all topped off by a Tom Waits type vocal.  Hmm...  Good one  !

Thanks for the comments, they are very helpful!

Wookie, glad to know I'm on your good side! And thanks for the comments.

Daryl, many thanks! I'll post the lyrics somewhere soon . . . your crappy speakers are apparently making my vocals sound good, so when/if you get to your proper monitors in your studio, prepare yourself for something more like a cat in a wood chipper.  :)

Bapu, thanks, speakers for Daryl, check. Steel drums replaced by . . . uh, that's my trouble. I've tried organ in the intro, other keyboards, more guitar . . . gonna have to get creative. Got any ideas?

Mesh, another groove head like myself, many thanks for taking the ride!!!

Makke - thanks, I appreciate the listen and the comments.

MGH - yes absolutely I need to edit some guitar parts to make them sit perfectly in the pocket. It's on my list for sure, thanks for the encouragement and for the compliments . . .

Allan, thanks very much, I appreciate particularly the comments on vocals, because it is definitely Tom Waits territory, but for some reason I have a hard time listening to a lot Tom Waits myself. Small doses are pretty cool for me, though. Other people rave about him, so there we go.

Fjz - yep! thanks, I was hoping the lyrics were intelligible in the main, so glad some got through the noise. :)

Enjoyed this.  I'm listening on crappy speakers qua Daryl.  The horns could use some subtle change ups IFF you want to make them *pass* *e.g. occasional roll offs .  IFF you like the sound of early synth keys strings and horns then I'd keep them.  Are they samples?  As Jerry Gerber said somewhere else, everyone here already knows what they want so why bother giving suggestions.  :D:DThanks for sharing!

    Hi there Tom.

Finally got home and managed to listen to this new song of yours.

Excellent lyrics... Made me chuckle. You certainly have a penchant for light hearted songs

Mix sounded great to me too.

    Hey Tom!

I'd leave it the way it is, steel drums and all. It's quirky, and nothing says quirky like steel drums. Even the corny synthy horns sound perfect, in context.  Great job on this and I think you did a fine job on the mix.

And I'm with you on Tom Waits...small doses only...though I did listen to this all the way through, LOL.

esoul,  this is amazing.  What I mean is that it is very well crafted.  This is not your straight up git up and go.  So many nuances, in out, up down.

In my dream world, you slow this down a tad, and get that skinny bones bones girl to sing it.  I know I'm out of line, but I had this hallucination about that.

Now then, besides that, what we have here is simply a well constructed piece.  You could study this for a semester and still not know everything about it.

Eph, I get now what you were referring to, pretty spot on. Thanks for giving this a spin.

AntManB, thanks for the steel drum vote, I think it's a keeper because it has a cheese factor, and because of inertia. Glad you liked the tune, thanks. Let's hear some of yours?

Thanks, stringjammer, it's kind of lyrics-heavy ain't it? Glad you found it amusing, I do, too!

Synkrotron/Andy, I appreciate your comments and thanks for having a sense of humor, which I think one needs,  particularly with this song.

Dan, thanks - those synth horns are Cinebrass, in the wrong hands, used for a purpose they were entirely not designed for! I'm waiting to add a real jazz-funk kick-ass horns library,  any suggestions? Anyone? Bueller?

JesseQ - I think that skinnybones girl would be great on this, she would make it inimitable. Thanks for the listen, keep it unreal!

Yeah, that was pretty cool...   I don't think I'd change anything.    It's got a great slinky groove with just a sprinkle of cheese on top, works well IMO.   Some really nice chord changes in there too.

    This is fun!!!
Love the funky feel (especially in the beginning..).. I'd keep the steel drums too.
They make it a really cool intro.
Love the "horn" riff and I especially love your chord changes.. Fun song to listen to.
Had my head a'boppin even though I'm in the office listening.

Right in your wheelhouse Tom, and well done as always. Here are my nits/suggestions:

    1. Replace the steel drums with... nothing at all! Let the guitar strum ring out.
    2. IMO the horns need a bit more attack, more BAM, less legato. Each note needs to punch.
    3. Keep on making brilliant quirky jazzy piano/bass tunes. You're great at it.

Dan, thanks for the horn tips. In my search, I found one called Fable Sounds Broadway Big Band - sounds pretty great, but it's from a didgy company, and it costs $2200. They have a "Lites" version but it looks really cut down. I'm a'thinking on it . . .

SteveC, thanks, yeah some cheese always slips in around here. I'll refrain from any analogies pertaining to politics. Thanks for the listen!

Mr.Grant, you sound like you know a groove or two yourself! Many many thanks!

Walt, a sincere thank you! I'm bugged by the horns and am looking to improve. I play a crappy trumpet myself. Oh yes, I'll keep 'em coming, thanks dude . . . and I know what I owe you! Stay tuned . . .

Funky Caribbean Ska -- you have created a new genre!  What a wonderful fun song.  It had me smiling all through it. The lyrics and vocals were very creative and I really liked the horns.  Oh ya, my vote is to keep in the steel drums.
    Nice one indeed!
