Windows 10 update broke SONAR
Hi forum! This week's major Windows 10 update seems to have broken my SONAR. When executing SONARPLT.exe I get the message that Windows does not recognize the MSVCP140.dll file or some such (my Windows version is in Norwegian, so I don't know the exact English wording). Appreciate any tips before I try uninstalling/reinstalling SONAR or roll back to the last Windows build! Sven

An easy thing to try is reinstall the latest SONAR update which you can find here. C:\ProgramData\Cakewalk\Command Center\Downloads You should see the SONAR_Platinum_Setup_22.9.0.30.exe there if you installed it earlier.

Thanks for the quick reply Noel! Doesn't work though, I get repeated instances of this error message regarding diffent add-ons/plugins: Unable to register the DLL/OCX:RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3 And then the MSVCP140.dll message comes again... Edit: Tried uninstalling and reinstalling from Command Center and it doesn't work. Gonna roll back Windows now...

Hi. I have SONAR Platinum 2016.09 installed on my laptop, with Norwegian OS (Win 10 Home X64), but have not encountered any issues so far. I use the internal sound card in WASAPI driver mode. Do not know if that matters or not. Have you tried to download this release again, to make sure the setup has not gotten corrupted somehow? All the best.

Have you restarted Windows after the update and tried reinstalling SONAR again? If you still have issues you could try contacting MS support in case it is specific to Norwegian windows although I can't see why that would be a factor.

Thanks guys! Rolling back worked, so I'll just have to wait and see if the issue arises again when Windows decides to update itself next time!

That's why I turned off windows updates for Windows10. When the first update came after I installed Windows 10, it messed up my Addictive Drums 2 computer ID number, I said that was it!! Turning off Windows updates is the best thing ever, especially when you work on other peoples songs. Just Saying !!

while I don't agree with this, I cant blame you. its one less thing to troubleshoot if there is a problem. so I can understand where your coming from. sometimes its seems updates can cause more problems than they are trying to solve. especially in the DAW world. I would keep an eye out for the C++ dynamic library updates though. those seem to change as Sonar updates change. but like I said, cant argue your method.

I was also hosed by the latest Windows update. I couldn't connect to the CCC nor to several specific websites..."cannot find server". Rolled back to the previous build, disabled Windows update, now I can connect to the CCC and whatever websites just fine.

It messed up my Addictive Drums also, and also some other mayhem like Adobe Reader corruption(!). Like the computer got a little lobotomy. If I was running a pro studio for clients I would dis-connect the internet from the DAW. But that's not my situation.

I work in IT as my day job, and I'm kept pretty busy with fixing problems in 3rd party apps that Windows Update broke. It's a very common and frequent problem. Whilst MS may regression test their own apps, they certainly don't have any system in place to gauge what other apps get broken out there.

obviously i am not jesse, but if you are asking about windows 10 and turning off the updates, it doesn't matter which version of windows you have home or professional, you can turn off the updates easily from control panel/administrative tools/services/windows update, then right click on windows update and disable it, you wont hear from windows update again until if and when you are ready to, again it works on windows 10 home or pro, always has. i have kept all my pc's and laptops at version 1511 without any issues, although i don't use sonar as my main daw, i try it out every new release just to see, haven't had any issues, my other 2 daw's which i use as my main daw's work flawlessly and haven't skipped a beat. if that is not what you were meaning just ignore me and carry on

The problem with turning off all updates is that you won't get the security patches, either. If you are going to be on the internet for any reason even for a short time, and your system is not fully patched, you are vulnerable to exploits. With so many Windows machines all over the world and connected, your vulnerability becomes my vulnerability. A fast-moving virus and, say, a million machines infected and we've all got a real problem. It's a little like not getting vaccinated: I understand your concern, but if you get sick I might catch something from you. I do think Microsoft should be more transparent about exactly what they are "updating." I am currently trying to recover from the Win 10 Anniversary update. I didn't know what it was, it took an hour and a half to complete, and it screwed up SONAR in ways I still haven't resolved a week later. A simple security patch would probably not have caused so much trouble. If the big "upgrades" were more clearly identified in advance, we could all wait until we had time to deal with potential problems.

People are forgetting an important reason why Windows 10 has updates. Its not unlike Sonar. Its to improve the product and fix bugs. Windows 10 is built on the same idea. Constant updating. I know many are cautious about the notion of updating. The problem is that one will loose the benefits of the improvements and the bug fixes. Windows 10 is meant to evolve just as Sonar is. Now overall I have not had much trouble getting updates from MS or CW.

This update broke addictive keys, realguitar and Best Service ERA 2 for me. Just using them in an important project and bam! both need activating again. God only knows what other vsts need re-activation. XLN required me register as if I had a completely new PC. All those damned internal audio devices reappeared and my audio interface was sent to the back of the room in sonar.

I'm just guessing here, but...I think that part of the whole Windows update thing is about protection from various, new mutant strains of viruses, ransomware, etc. If you have software with copy protection, that copy protection might reach deep into the Windows operating system, so Windows thinks it's something malevolent. If this is the case, it could take a while before new types of copy protection for Windows programs come into play that are compatible with the kind of frequent updates Microsoft is doing. Think of how many different types of copy protection have existed since software came along...perhaps an additional evolution is needed.

Right before I install a new version of Platinum. I do all the Win updates, then install Platinum. I then make an image file of the C drive. I never update in between versions unless there's some compelling reason to do so. I don’t want MS auto updating without me being aware of it, just in case there’s a problem with the update and it makes Platinum unstable and then I’m scratching my head wondering what went wrong with a client looking over my shoulder- too risky. I’ve never gotten a computer virus in decades, because I’m careful.

I figure that the latest Platinum was created with the very latest Win updates, so that doesn't necessarily mean that it works well with future updates without a glitch or 2, so this is why Ii I do the updates right before installing Plat and not do them in between updates. I do all the updates including the optional ones, since that's what Cakewalk said is best. Many times I've installed the latest Plat along with the Win updates and then found something that was a bug that bothered me and I simply reverted back to the last image of my C drive and simply waited a month until the next Plat update arrived and tried it, hoping the problem would be fixed. Of course I turned in a bug report if needed or just asked others in the forum if they encountered the problem. Sometimes it's user error or a corrupt file or something squirrelly Like I've encountered recently. I'm a firm believer in image files and keep my C drive nice and lean as possible, to keep the image files small. I use Acronis and the image files are 24 gigs under the maximum compression Acronis uses. When things go haywire you can take time to troubleshoot or just go back to a previous image file and wait and see what happens as this get fixed. I use Macrium Free for my internet computer and it actually for my purposes works as well as Acronis and it's free. So check it out.

sorry for the delay Jonesey. I am using Windows 10 Pro. This is how I turned off my Updates. 1. Run, services.msc 2. Find Windows Update in the services list. 3. Double click Windows Update services. In the Windows Update Properties Window, select ‘Disabled’ in the Startup type list box. 4. Click Apply and Ok. Easy enough
