Meanwhile - in the post this morning.
Steven Wilson's remixed "Tales from Topographic Oceans". I loved what he did with "Close to the Edge". restoring dynamics and life that had been squashed out of the old "remastered" CD. I have only had chance to dip in for a quick listen to the stereo mixes of Tales so far and it sounds like another winner. I am itching to get the Blue Ray version on tomorrow! Wilson has been accused of "cleaning things up too much" by some critics so while I love it YMMV.

Wow, I didn't know this one was on the horizon. Especially looking forward to hearing the surround mixes on this. Thanks!

I got into Yes kind of late. My first live show was Tales Of Topographic Oceans. Wowzers, was that awesome! I, too, had no idea an update was coming. I just listened to the Rhino reissue two days ago. What a coincidence! Definitely going to have to, let's see (LP, cassette, CD, remastered CD), quintuple dip! And on Blu-ray! Woo hoo! We are the sun!

There are quite a few extras. I have not listend yet. The obligatory "Studio Run Throughs" which I normally find are intresting to listen to once or twice for an insight into the creative process and some single edits. A live recording of Ritual - 1974 concert in Zurich. On the Blue Ray there are the Wilson 5.1 mixes & 24/96 stereo mixes. Extras include flat transfers from the original master at 24/192, "needle drop" vinyl transfers, alternate takes and instrumental mixes. Some of the extra material will be of academic intrest only of course.

Hi, I will, likely, get this, since this is, in my estimation, one of the greatest rock works ever done, along with "Passion Play" and a couple of other things. I, too, saw the original show at the Long Beach Arena, and I remember crying on the way out ... I did not think I would see "pure", "unadulterated" and "clearcut" classical music within the rock context, and here it was. And that was 1973, or 1974 I think .. have to look at the tickets now ... and I did not see another single concert of that quality, until 2015 when I saw KC with 3 drummers. It fits along the lines, of Nureyev and then later Segovia, and then Marcel Marceau, and then ETC La Mamma ... as by very far, the best things I have ever seen in my life.

I have Wilson's remixed/remastered Thick as a Brick, and although it's one of my least-favorite Tull albums I was impressed by how he'd subtly improved it. So I immediately went looking for the 2011 Aqualung remix, only to have Amazon tell me it's "not available". Apparently, it's been pulled because Wilson didn't like the way it was mastered, so he's doing it over. He recently started a small firestorm when he posted on the Gearslutz mastering forum to basically imply that mastering is a scam. Needless to say, that went over like the proverbial lead balloon with that crowd, but it piqued my curiosity and led to me discovering what has since become one of my favorite reference recordings, Hand.Cannot.Erase. It's an excellent case-study in the art of mixing and mastering. Wilson's shaking things up by essentially not mastering this stuff in the traditional sense. MEs are fond of saying that a good-enough mix requires no mastering, and Wilson seems to be proving that point. I can only hope this is the tip of the spear for a broader movement to return to dynamic recordings. Anyone know if he remixed In the Court of the Crimson King? And, if so, where can I buy it? [UPDATE] OK, I found a complete list of his remixes on his Wikipedia page. And yes, he did do Crimson King in 2009. But I'm still hunting for a place to buy a copy.

In the old days stuff needed to be optimized for vinyl and perhaps have songs matched to form a coherent whole for the album. In the modern world, it always seemed to me that the tail is wagging the dog and it's more about new tools than necessity. Anyone know if he remixed In the Court of the Crimson King? And, if so, where can I buy it?
He did the full treatment in 2009: https://www.discogs.com/King-Crimson-In-The-Court-Of-The-Crimson-King-An-Observation-By-King-Crimson/release/1967769

http://stevenwilsonhq.com/ - I purchased from the Headphone Dust store linked in the top right, there is also a link to a USA/Canada store but that only seems to have the T-Shirts. It looks like Headphone Dust ships internationally but p&p may make the price prohibitive. And its good.

Just get Live in Toronto 2015 ... and go crazy. That version of "Starless" and then "ITCOTCK" and then "21st Century Man" ... to close out the show ... is all the KC you will EVER need. By the time that Mel Collins takes over at 8:30 or so of "Starless" and then carries it to the end, it's absolutely amazing and fascinating. Pure power and energy at its best. I am not sure that even SW can improve on that. And, dig the 3 drummers together, and how tight and supportive of each other they are. Truly amazing!
