Manual update huge file to download.

Why do I have to download a file of over 500MB every month  to update documentation? Can it not be set to do just the update for the current version which is  at most 4 or 5 pages? I don't have high speed  WiFi and this takes time to download.

The current installer includes multiple formats and languages. There are a couple of changes to the current process which could reduce the size of the file. I am pretty sure there are already requests on file.

Yes and not the first time it has been mentioned. The Reference Guide pdfs (there are several in the installer) are from a January...Jaunuary 2015. The Reference Guide follows the release schedule used by all previous versions of SONAR. There is a request on file about updating the Reference Guide too.

Trying to update just a portion of a .pdf file is like trying to update just a portion of a .wav or .jpg file.  It's all or nothing.  I just skip downloading it every other month or do it during some down time.

I realize that this is a problem for some (I assume if you're living in the woods or farm country) but I can see why this would get over looked also. 500mb is pretty small potatoes for anyone with a up to date internet connection. It's like watching a show on Netflix (or even less than that really.)

I am not sure anyone suggested patching pdfs. As it stands, it does not matter when the local documentation installer is downloaded, all the Reference Guides in the file including the one that actually gets installed are the same as the initial release in 2015. This is just one of the issues with the current process.

It is included in the SONAR Local Documentation package available in the Command Center and your account.

One alternative is to choose "What's New" from the Help menu, and using your browser's print option, print only the new features. With Edge, Chrome, and other browsers you can "print" as a PDF file if you don't want to print on paper.

Another is to download the eZine, which is a PDF (typically around 2 MB) and contains info and applications on the new features. Although neither of these options updates the local documentation, they do provide updated documentation.

I have wondered about this too, but I guess it isn't too hard to see what a time consuming task it would be to constantly update a full manual with so much changing every month. I guess the slight inconvenience is the price paid for the success of rolling updates.

I use the ezine to discover new features, but the online documentation is also excellent for a quick lookup and always seems to be up to date. As an example a search for 'Cakewalk load balancing,' one of this months new features, yields this excellent guide as the first organic result:
    https://www.cakewalk.com/Documentation?product=SONAR&language=3&help=NewFeatures.002.html

Many software developers don't write manuals anymore (Melodyne springs to mind with not even an online written guide), though this is not a position I could ever defend. A bunch of videos does not a manual make! I loves me a good read of the user guide:) That said, we readers seem to be an increasingly endangered species.

Thank you.  I see that in my Command Center as downloaded.  Do you know the exact path to the PDF?

Downloading Update 1 took me 3 hours. The first attempt failed right at the end with Unconfirmed.crdownload - using latest Chrome) and I had to press "resume" 6 or 7 times per attempt.

But this is waaay better than the bad old days where a download was huge files.

On the other hand, now I'm having to download monthly. This month twice.

What I think would be very helpful to have would be an index of the eZines, showing in which issue a particular feature is located, maybe even which page of that issue. An updated version could be provided with each new release. It would make it easier for the eZines to function as appendix to the manual.
