happy about Sonar's progress
I would like to stop by and commend Cakewalk for the work that they are doing on Sonar. The rolling updates have turned out to be a major success. I am even starting to tolerate the new comping paradigm. Although I would still like to see the old 'layers' method return as a choice in the "edit filter" list alongside clips, automation, midi, etc, I have to admit that the recently improved current approach is pretty good. I see that Cakewalk intends to develop it more in the near future, and I hope they will maintain it as a priority. The old paradigm offered a lot of creative possibilities, but this works well for its intended purpose. Another program I use has been quite badly mishandled by its parent company, and I'm cautiously optimistic about the partnership between Cakewalk and Gibson. It appears that Gibson is happy to let Sonar develop according to the designs of the Cakewalk people, who should know a thing or two after all these years. During the Roland years I actively prepared to move to a different platform, but I'm glad I didn't. Things could still go wrong, I suppose, but where we are now is pretty good. I would like to see Sonar listed as officially compatible with more 3rd party software, such as from Universal Audio and Izotope. I suppose that will come with an expanding base of users. The program itself is the best its ever been. Thanks.

I am also very pleased with the direction SONAR has taken since this model was introduced. So I agree that the Bakers deserve some praise, and positive feedback All the best.

+1 Sonar has never been better! Although there might have been favorites, the current version/model by far surpasses even our wildest expectations. Kudos to the Bakers!

SONAR is pretty awesome but we shouldn't heap praise. I wouldn't want the team to relax too much before the hover car and talent features are released.

You didn't get your hover car yet, Bob? I'm still waiting for the talent button, though...

FWIW, both companies do test their products with SONAR to verify operation. However, that's not the same thing as supporting a product, which implies support people who know SONAR as well as they know their own products so they can sort out any issues involving both elements. Then again as it continues to pick up new users, SONAR is showing up more and more on other companies' radar...

Yes, I am quite happy with SONAR's rolling updates paradigm. So much so that I opted for the lifetime updates. Hey Bob, I must say that I really luv your avatar pic. What is it exactly? Every time I look at it, I am somehow reminded of Grandpa from the 'ol Munsters family. Cheers, Billy Buck

I too have to say I was skeptical about the subscription model and the promise of rolling updates but I have been pleasantly surprised. So far it has gone well. Not to get OT but in the vein of Billy Buck's post, whenever I see the Chuck Jones name I am reminded of the old Warner Bros. cartoons. Not from the content of his posts but strictly the name.

I agree - Sonar has improved significantly over the last 18 months. It has to be difficult for the development team to not ever have "downtime", but it's certainly in the my (i.e. the customer's) favor.

hard not to love sonar, i've gone lifetime. in stark contrast to my vegas pro experience. sony basically stopped development for 2 years, then recently sold to magix. lotta probs on the new vegas site. after using vegas since v1.1, i, one among many, never got the upgrade email, they upped the price, arbitrarily changed the interface for the worse... long story short, i'll use my current version of vegas if i need to, otherwise i've "moved on" to resolve 12.5.2. it's a robust, contemporary program that, in the same two-year period, went from an industry-standard color correction tool to a full-featured nle! and it's free! cakewalk gets my lifetime commitment, magix gets replaced as my nle vendor, i saved $249 (i'll add cw plugin extras of course) and life goes on...

My exact experience with Vegas Pro too dlion16. I loved that software, though I can't help but think it's very gradual demise began when Sony bought out Sonic Foundry in 2003.

I originally got into Sonar because it's what a friend was using and we wanted interoperability. Over the years, though, I've never regretted it, and I agree that the most recent iterations are fantastic. Certainly not perfect, yet, but always better and better. I have my list of features I would love to see, as does everyone, but mostly I perfectly satisfied. The only gripe is that with the rolling updates I now update Sonar more often than I publish new music, and that's just embarrassing!

Right you are, tenfoot. I did a couple of remakes of old stuff in resolve. There's a wealth of tutorials and when I needed to do a freeze frame, for instance, I was able to Google it and get the answer quickly. Must say, I'm impressed. Won't take that long to acclimate, what vegas should have become… Kudos to cakewalk.

Showed a class a Vietnamese year olds a 'How to draw Bugs' video by Chuck Jones last week. I was surprised by how many were blown away by it.
