The NASA Sleep Promoting Light Bulb.
Used by NASA to help astronauts sleep in space, this is the light bulb that encourages production of melatonin—the hormone that promotes sleep. Unlike typical light bulbs that emit high levels of short wavelength “blue” light that suppresses melatonin, the NASA light bulb’s patented filter reduces blue light by 50% to facilitate a better night’s sleep. Ideal for use in a nightstand lamp for 30 minutes before you fall asleep, the light bulb helps maintain your body’s natural circadian rhythm so you fall asleep faster and wake up more refreshed. The 9-watt LED produces the same light as a 65-watt incandescent for optimal illumination while reading yet lasts up to 16X longer.

I've always found the ones that go dark when you turn them off work pretty well...

I find just using the "soft glow" yellow type of bulb, keeping the light low before bed, and having flu.x enabled on my computer works just fine for helping me sleep.

I've got a super-bright LED bulb (the white, white, white one) in my bedroom/office. It probably puts out more of the blue wave-length than any light bulb I've ever owned and yet I can fall asleep just sitting at the computer. However, I use James' method and just turn the dang thing off when I want to get some sleep (which occurs roughly 20-40 seconds after my head hits the pillow).

You're my hero. You can turn the light off *after* your head hits the pillow.

I don't know if it promotes melatonin or not, but my nightly application of oxidized tetrahydracannobinol does the trick every time. Locally produced, all-natural and certified organic. Now, what I really need are headphones that remove themselves from my head once snoring commences.

Some researchers experimenting with sleep promoting light bulbs: I don't think these guys work for NASA though. [EDIT: Some NSFW language.]

Here's my idea: Build a device that mounts on the ceiling above the bed. This device has a retractable cable that attaches with a special connector to a velcro loop. You put the loop around the top of your headphones (or near the "Y" of your earbuds) and connect the loop to the cable. Just like those devices that sample sound to cancel background noise, when this devices detects snoring it softly retracts the cable removing the headphones. If it encounters too much resistance, the special connector releases (in which case you're stuck with the headphones on, but nothing gets broken). Or, you can do what I do, I have these iPod tower speakers on each side of the bed by my head. No headphones to worry about (and, yes, you could always get one of those under-pillow speakers, but I doubt that would be worth it).
