Kemper Amp Profiler
I am new to the Kemper amp profiler, but I thought it would be a good addition to my studio. So far, it's been more frustration and a waste of time than anything else. I've spent four days on the Kemper forum with no success. The guys here at the SONAR forums are knowledgeable on a wide range of topics, plus this is my home forum, so I figured someone here would have some suggestions. I know this will be asked, so I will try to detail it now: I run the DSL phone cord to the computer and its online. Works fine. I go from the back of the Kemper (bread box, I think is what they call the model I have...it's not the rack mount) with a USB cable and into my computer. That works fine. I can scroll through all the profiles IN the Kemper itself by using the Browser knob. I've been to the Kemper download site and have downloaded and installed everything that's available for Windows operating systems. I've done this twice. All is good to this point, but here's the problem: I can find the Rig Manager on my computer and click on it and it opens the Rig Manager and I can see hundreds, if not thousands, of profiles, but none of them play. I can scroll through them, highlight one I want to try, double-click, but nothing happens. I can drag and drop a profile into a folder on the left and open the folder and see the profile, but I can't get it to work. No sound. Even more frustrating, I've downloaded some profiles from other sources, such a Michael Britt who has some of the best, and I have downloaded them and dragged them into a folder in the Rig Manager, but they won't play either. I've been to all the settings suggested on the Kemper site, including Preferences, still with no luck. The "Preview" tab is clicked. However, if I open the menu with "Preview" listed, it's grayed-out and not usable. One guy on the Kemper forum asked if I could see "My Profiler" on the left side, but it's not there. Now, I'm wondering if my computer even recognizes the Kemper. I've tried going to Devices and adding a Device, but still no luck. How would I add it? This is from the Kemper Forum: "In Rig Manager, do you see "MyProfiler" over in the green box over in the left hand column? It should be just below the "Rig Exhange" folder. If not, then your computer is not seeing the Kemper. Can you try a different USB port on your computer?" I've tried different cables and USB ports. I know the cable is fine because I use it with my Focusrite to record in SONAR. The cable also works fine if I want to play a profile that's already IN the Kemper itself. The problem is trying to access profiles in the RIG MANAGER that shows on the computer screen. I'd like to hear any suggestions that the Kemper users here suggest. It appears that my computer is not "seeing" the Kemper, and the first thing I need to try now is to find out how to make the computer "see" and "recognize" the Kemper. Thanks in advance. DS

Hi Don, The Kemper is a great unit. Many of the free profiles... are... well... free. Connect the Kemper to a brown USB-2 port (not one of the blue USB-3 ports). Your Kemper should show up in Rig Manager. You should see all the Profiles currently on it. Drag any desired new profiles onto the Kemper unit in Rig Manager. The profiles will then be copied over. If your Kemper isn't showing up in Rig Manager, that issue needs to be addressed.

Michael Britt has created some great profiles. If you have access to some nice tube-amps, you'll likely wind up creating/liking your own Profiles best. Your amp/cab dialed-in the way you like, mic'd the way you like, and playing/refining the Profiles with your guitars.

Jim, it's you! haha...I just emailed you within the past 5 minutes. I have those good old, and newer, tube amps that I love. I really dialed in some great tones recently when I was doing some sound checks on SONAR Platinum. M. Britt has some older Marshall, some Tweed, and especially some DUMBLE and DUMBLE clone sounds that I heard on his page, and I really like them. I'm really doing all this for DUMBLE tones that I can't get anywhere else. I'm going from the KEMPER into the front of the machine you just upgraded for me. That port works with everything else, including the KEMPER itself that comes will hundreds of profiles. I can scroll through the Profiles using the Browser knob, and the sounds play fine. They won't play from the Rig Manager screen on the computer. I am using the same cable I use going from my Focusrite into the same port on the front of the computer you built. Everything works fine with that cable except with the Rig Manager. I do not see anything on the left side of the Rig Manager window to indicate that the computer is recognizing the KEMPER. "My Profiler" is not shown. When I find "Preview" in one of the menus, it is grayed-out and not usable. However, the "Preview" tab is clicked in Preferences on the Rig Manager. What can I try now?
Thanks! Don

Hi Don, If you go in Device Manager, do you see the Kemper listed there? Does the Kemper entry have a yellow exclamation mark?

I just looked, Jim. The Kemper is not listed. I even clicked on the down arrows that open some of the menus further and I couldn't find the Kemper anywhere. I found the Focusrite, so seems the Kemper would show up some where also. I can do a computer search and the Kemper shows up and so does the Rig Manager. But it's not showing in the Device Manager. Thanks. DS

Hi Don, If the Kemper isn't showing in Device Manager, it's not going to show up in RigManager. When doing a computer search, it's showing installed software. If the Kemper unit isn't seen and the driver loaded, RigManager won't work. If RigManager isn't connected to the Kemper unit, you won't be able to preview Profiles. Have to get the Kemper showing up in Device Manager... Is this a new Kemper?

Don - Are you connecting the Kemper to the PC via the USB Type B port on the Kemper? http://www.mycablemart.com/store/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=5164 I don't believe the Type A USB connector on the Kemper will work when syncing the Rig Manager to the Kemper. The Type A is for uploading saved/downloaded/purchased rigs as well as release OS updates (and backups, exporting) via a USB "stick"/thumb drive. The network connector (DSL phone cord) on the Kemper is for the remote and (also) will not work when syncing the RM to the "toaster". You can see all the profiles in the RM since it's just (basically) a website.

Jeff, I'm using the kind of USB cable shown in the link you sent. It has one squarish end and one rectangular end. The DSL is connected to the computer, which is online. I run the USB cable shown in your link from the back of the Kemper box to the computer. The profiles shown on the Kemper screen work fine. But none of them work on the Rig Manager screen on the computer screen. "My Profiles" does not show in the Rig Manager, and the "Preview" is selected in the Rig Manager Preferences but it won't work. If I access Preview through another menu it shows up, but it is grayed out and is unusable.

Hmmm. That's definitely the right cable type. If "Kemper Profiler" is not showing up as an entry in the Device Manager under "Sound, video and game controllers" when the Kemper is plugged in via USB, you could try manually loading the drivers first (create a Win10 restore point first if you want to): http://www.driverscape.com/download/kemper-profiler I'm not on Win 10, so I don't know if installing drivers is as easy as clicking on the downloaded driver file. I would think if the USB cable is good, the drivers would be loaded automatically the first time the Kemper is connected. I didn't have to do anything special loading drivers, but that was a few years ago ...and Win 7.

I finally solved it. A guy on the Kemper forum showed me how to check for my version of Kemper, and it was out of date. I had downloaded the correct one, but then had to put it on a USB drive and plug it into the Kemper and let it sync and do whatever it needed to do. This took a while, but after a few reboots and tweaks I've finally got it all working fine. Thanks for the interest and suggestions here. It took a while but we finally got it. DS

Excellent! Now the hard part: going through the Rig Exchange and finding the "good ones" based on your taste!

And writing down their names when you do! I have found a few that I really like but I didn't write down the names and now I can't find them...but in time I will. Now that I've had the chance to spend some time with the Kemper now that it's working right, I can tell it's quite a machine.
