Overtone Plugins Are A Threat and Were Removed!
Norton doesn't like Overtone for some reason. It removes every .exe file after I extract them from the parent zip folder. It says fewer than 50 Norton users have these files. I downloaded them directly from Overtone's site.

Virus: software that hides its presence, does things to your computer without your knowledge or permission and interferes with your ability to use said computer. The actual virus here is Norton. What you want to do is whitelist the entire \program files\cakewalk tree and tell Norton to leave it alone.

Norton doesn't like any plug-in from AAS either, so I've had to restore them all from quarantine after Norton so helpfully has removed them from my Downloads folder. BTW: Norton has an antivirus real time protection setting called "SONAR Protection". It goes without saying that I've got that setting permanently on. I sure don't trust them Bakers.

>fewer than 50 Norton users have these files. the message says it all. It's deleting them based on reputation not that they contain virus or malware. And reputation being that that less than some large number of their end users don't have that *.exe or *.dll. Its protecting your system from any software created by any company that isn't a major player or who hasn't genuflected to Norton and submitted their software to it white list testing. For this reason you will run into this with software from a number of small shops. I ran into the same thing with my MenuMagic software and submitted it to them for white listing. Considering that Norton has possibly tens of millions of users - MenuMagic will never have a high enough reputation to not have problem with such a system. If you work in a major corporation and never use anything but megacorp applications it might be a great system - but for anyone else this system is bullsh1t. You should: * Check Norton's web site on how to white list or otherwise deal with this issue so you can get your software. * Advise the plugin company about the Norton issue and that they should consider submitting their software for white listing. * Once your subscription to Norton has expired switch to ESET or Kaspersky.

I hope this doesn't scare anybody off of Overtone plugins because they seem like good people with a good product.

OP, why are you using Norton? Do yourself a favour and uninstall it. If you absolutely need a virus scanner on your studio computer, I recommend Avira. It scores high in detection and low in false positives. Very well designed and doesn't have too large a footprint on resources.

Norton --grrrrrrr! Hate it hate it hate it. Remove it. The last time I encountered Norton (on a friend's new computer) it was a real fight to get it off the machine, but in the end I did it and it was worth it. There are several much better anti-virus programs available. I run Windows 10, keep it updated, and let the supplied anti-virus do its job. I also keep a updated copy of the free Malwarebytes in case something gets through. Also, just be really careful where you browse on your DAW computer. There is nastiness out there that no commercial program can guard against.

OK well, Norton has always been solid for me (until now). I've never had an major issue in 23 yrs. I've used AVG, Panda, McAfee, etc and HAVE had issues. So I won't be dissing them anytime soon. Besides, isn't it better someone's looking out fo me than not? A small inconvenience compared to a major issue if said files had been hacked, no?! OTFS, if more of you Overtone users also used Norton I wouldn't be having this problem... so it's really your faults. (OTFS=on the flip side)

Bitdefender is the highest rated and least intrusive. I got a great deal on AVG Ultimate. NOW I have slow downs and pop-ups galore now, that I NEVER had with Bitdefender, which I had used for years...so not happy with AVG, and will switch back once AVG is done...

Just to add my 2 cents... Running Avira here on my DAW PC, with no issues. The Avira Free and the Avira Pro versions both use the same malware detection engine and the Avira Protection Cloud. The Pro version adds Web protection and Email scanning, neither of which I need. Avira consistently scores in the top tier for malware detection along with Kaspersky and Bitdefender. I also use Bitefender Free on my home theater PC. It is quiet and unobtrusive, but does not offer the real-time scanning exclusion options that Avira does. Other than that, it is a set it and forget it type of operation. I became a Symantec/Norton refugee 10 years ago. Had used them for years, but the last time I updated, my computer slowed to a crawl. Took them up on their refund offer, mailed the disk back, and never looked back. I really cannot see paying for a subscription when there is quality FREE malware protection, unless you just wish to make a donation to the kind developers

Hey, just wanted to confirm that you're running Avira FREE on a Win 10 PC. Bitdefender Free says it's not yet compatible with Win 10, so I'm looking for the best free solution. I am running the standard Windows Defender thing, but I'd like to have an additional layer of protection, as long as it doesn't cause any problems of course. Thanks! P.S. Overtone plugs are definitely not viruses! They're among the best bang-for-buck plugins around. Cheers, Eddie

Avira Free runs on Windows 10. https://www.avira.com/en/free-antivirus-windowsYou can make use of the Scan Exceptions configuration to omit processes and files from the detection process. Recommend putting your audio stuff here. I use Bitdefender Free on my Windows 7 PC for it's lightweight protection on older hardware. I believe the free version of Bitdefender is based on an earlier release, which would explain it's lack of Windows 10 support. Hopefully they will update it someday. Another good free antivirus option that has become available, but I have not tested yet, is Sophos Home. Same protection as offered to their business clients. https://www.sophos.com/en-us/lp/sophos-home.aspx As far as Windows Defender goes on Windows 10, it is an either/or decision, but not both. By default on Windows 10, Defender is designed to activate in the absence of a 3rd party antivirus program, and to deactivate if it detects one. It is never a good idea to attempt to run two real-time resident antivirus programs together. That can cause big problems. It's OK to layer something like Malwarebytes for example, or as many on-demand scanners as you wish.

cclarry Bitdefender Free runs on Win 10 also...
https://forum.bitdefender.com/index.php?/topic/59225-free-version-for-windows-10/ Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition is not compatible with Windows 10. You will be able to install it but there will be side effects including but not limited to inaccurate detection, unwanted false alarms of legitimate apps that come with Windows 10, etc. As the best protection for the new OS, we would recommend one of the Bitdefender 2015 classic line products: Antivirus Plus, Internet Security, Total Security We do not offer technical support for Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition on Windows 10.

More so with DAW software. I just use the one with Windows. If you are insecure about the one included in Windows just about every AV company has an online scan.
