I'm losing this battle with Windows...
Whenever I start up Keyscape as a standalone executable, it throws up the following dialogs: I click OK and Keyscape comes up fine, and I am able to save user presets. There does not seem to be any problem related to the above message, but I still want to make it go away. Looking at the properties for the STEAM folder, sure enough it shows its read-only attribute is set: However, I am unable to clear the RO attribute. It looks like it does, but when I check again it's reverted back to read-only. I am the owner of the folder, I am an administrator, and I have full access to the folder: But I still cannot clear the RO bit on this folder, any of its sub-folders (e.g. Keyscape) or files. What the heck am I doing wrong? Feel free to tell me it's something dumb. BTW, I've also tried moving the STEAM folder to another location, following Spectrasonics' instructions, but the problem persists. P.S. This is only happening on my laptop. I don't get these messages on my primary DAW.

Ah, maybe nevermind...that RO bit is set on my desktop machine, too. On both machines it applies only to the STEAM folder. Individual files on both machines are NOT marked read-only. This may have nothing to do with Windows permissions after all.

It is my understanding that Keyscape is, as of yet, not able to run in standalone mode and must be run as VST plugin...even though you've found a workaround...must be something ol Erik and the boys have made sure can't be changed. But, it's also my understanding that they are going to release a stand alone version really soon. I would also imagine that if you can't figure it out, ol pal. Most of us wouldn't have a clue...I know I wouldn't:-)

They are due to release a standalone executable very soon. I've asked if I could get a beta copy in the meantime, but haven't heard back yet. For now, I am using SAVIHost, and despite the warnings actually works just fine with Keyscape. BTW, Omnisphere works fine with SAVIHost as well. I was originally tipped off to SAVIHost by Spectrasonics, in fact.

And it works with both VST2 and VST3 plugins! I'm using it with the 64-bit VST3 of bx_rockrack V3, for example.

You running Win10 aniversary edition? I had similar problems with admin rights but with other software. Had something to do with parts involving local admin account being changed in some way.... Or am I dreaming this up? I'll look into it.

Just reaching here but I'm sure you have probably checked the permissions on the shortcut/link that points to the Steam folder, and the advanced settings tab, just to make sure something didn't get bumped. Mine is set to allow everything.

Your hunch may be, if not a full explanation, perhaps a clue. The properties for the STEAM link (c:\programdata\spectrasonics\steam) indicate that it is read-only. But on my DAW it isn't read-only. It doesn't seem to matter; both raise the same warning message when I run Keyscape within SAVIHost. What has me going in circles is that it shouldn't matter whether a link is read-only. It's just a placeholder that points to another folder, and it should be the perms on the real directory that matter. I may just have to defer all this until Spectrasonics comes through with the promised standalone executable.

are you running SAVIHost as administrator? Moving from Win7 to Win10, I found SAVIHost flaky unless it is run as administrator. Cantabile lite may work better.

Thanks for the reply, you have sparked my curiosity. Actually, I'm bored as H**l watching a debate... I do have a couple more questions: Omnisphere also uses the Steam folder, does it yield this msg. if you open it in SAVIHos? Do both Keyscape and Omni yield the msg if you open them in Sonar? Ok, I'm done now...

I'm not sure, but does STEAM have it's own user account that it's running under instead of yours?

How about renaming the STEAM folder and creating a new one? (and copy everything in to it)

Curiously, after re-installing Keyscape these messages went away. What changed? Maybe the difference is that after the initial installation I'd moved the STEAM folder to my library drive, whereas this time the installer recognized the new location and did the update in situ. Dunno. It remains a mystery. Windows still says the STEAM folder is read-only.
Further mysteries...the reason I re-installed was not an attempt to resolve the read-only message, but to address an entirely new problem that cropped up this morning: Keyscape was suddenly unable to open any instruments on my main DAW. I would get a messagebox saying: Cannot load SourceSource "Wing Tack Tremolo ^ Stereo" from Directory "Keyscape Library". File Wing Tack Tremolo ^ Stereo.zmap may be missing or corrupted. Try refreshing the SoundSource Browser Sure enough, I discovered that all of Keyscape's library (.db) files were GONE! I've been careful not to touch anything on the primary DAW, as it's all been working fine. I certainly didn't make any changes while the computer was shut down for the night. But somehow, files that were there last night weren't there today. After re-installation everything was fine again. Bizarre.

When I updated to Win 10 I had to reauthorize all my Spectrasonics products...including Keyscape which I'd just installed and authorized a week earlier.
