melodyne

I find Melodyne difficult to work with. Admittedly, I only use it every 2-3 months, and just for a little while. However, I used to use V-Vocal about that frequently, and seemed to have better luck with it. My question is: is it possible the problem is that the included version is very basic, so that I need to upgrade in order to have more tools or better control. I'm not trying to  do anything complicated. I simply want to change the pitch of certain transients, and just find it very hit and miss. Incidentally, I have the version of Sonar that is just prior to Platinum, and it's the Producer version

Thanks.

Hi Larry.

You certainly have many more sound shaping tools to work with in the upgrade versions of Melodyne. The detection algorithms are the same, with the exception of polyphonic detection in the top two versions.

I upgraded to editor then studio over the past two releases and believe it was worth every cent, but then I quite liked melodyne from the get go. Just a single step upgrade to assistant will give you most of the missing tools. There is a chart here with details of the different versions: (scroll down the page)

Based on their "pay the difference" policy, is the upgrade from Essential (that comes with Sonar) to Assistant $149?

Peace!

You could probably mail them for a nice offer, they've been sympathetic in the past.

But you don't really need that to change the pitch of transients, where is that going wrong for you? Just grab the blob and pull it up or down. Split the note first if you only want to get a portion.

The splitting tool is not obvious - you just double click, from Mr. Anderton:

"I just confirmed you can in fact split notes with Essential, I thought because there wasn't a split tool you couldn't do it. Ya learn something new every day...at least in this forum

I suggest the following. Hover over the note's centerline and move the mouse up slowly. You'll see where the tool turns into the double-arrow split tool and then you'll know where to double-click."

A big tip I learned when upgrading from the Essential to the Editor version is to split the consonants from the blobs and do not pitch edit the consonants. The consonants have no pitch drift (the wavey lines) over the blobs. If you pitch edit the consonants it sounds robotic and fake. Well worth it to go from Melodyne Essentials to Melodyne Editor.

Thanks for the tips. I did not know how to split a blob, and did learn from this string. However, what i had originally wanted to do was to get rid of a transient where my voice had cracked, and I just wanted to remove that little line above the blob. I tried to draw a rectangle around it--which I did, but  I couldn't do anything with that. Perhaps that is for the more advanced versions. Then, I did split the blob, and was easily able to remove the cracking. However, when I did this, I was left with no voice sound. While this is understandable, with V Vocal, I  was able to just draw a line to continue the tone of my voice. Perhaps drawing a sound line is also an element found in a higher version.

Sorry, I have Studio 4 which does have its own dedicated split tool. I assumed because you can split with Essential that it also has one, that's really weird that it's hidden that way!

To the OP, you can't draw lines with Melodyne like you could in V-Vocal. In none of the versions. There may be a different way to solve what you want to do though, editing is just generally a bit different when you're coming from V-Vocal.

Why don't you still use V-Vocal?
