Behringer Motor 61 and Sonar Platinum as Mackie Surface Controller
Hi everybody!!! I recently bought a Behringer Motor 61 that I want to use both as a master keyboard controller and a Mackie surface controller but it seem it not work in Sonar (I refer to the motorized faders and beyond)..... I take all the steps necessary to connect the Motor and Sonar, but Sonar constantly says "connecting" in the status window... Behringer told me that the keyboard respects the Mackie protocol so I must ask the Sonar technical support to help me.... so, is there anybody outhere that can help me?!?!?!? I feel so sad..... thank you in advice...........

Hi, and welcome to this forum. Make sure the Behringer Motor 61 is visible and checked in Preferences (P), MIDI, Devices. To connect it deeper, you might want to check out http://www.azslow.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=30He is a fellow SONAR user, and made this especially (I believe) for integrating MIDI controllers, and see "what does what". All the best.

Thanks Ken But for "Mackie Compatible" devices I recommend other solution: http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3449057In that thread I explain why. I mean AZCtrl also will work, but moded original plug-in is mode "standard" (also open source, can be significant for some users). brands Behringer told me that the keyboard respects the Mackie protocol so I must ask the Sonar technical support to help me.... so, is there anybody outhere that can help me?!?!?!? No, they do not. They have done that for X-Touch but not for Motor.

I am not sure, but think it might go into (C:\Program Files\)Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces. Others may know better.

There is direct link in the same post as for DLL. When you press it, it opens SourceForge page. Find button "Raw" and press it. It will open test file. "File/Save as..." in your browser. Also that is not important at the beginning, it is for ProChannel EQ... last but not least, I do not know in what folder should I place these files.... please, could you help me?
If you have only one version of Sonar installed, just use Windows Explorer to find "MackieControl.dll" on your disk. That file you should replace (do not forget make a backup copy of the original).

I am glad I could help. With knobs I can not help. The documentation is typical Behringer... And I do not have the device. ini file should be in the same folder, that is correct. When you find how to make encoders working and if you find where on Motör are "mode" switching, with this INI everything should work as specified in the documentation (open MackieControl settings and press F1 to open the help file).

Today I've worked using every fader, knob and button of the Motor and all it's ok... In summary, you must first update the firmware and then use your two file... :-)

+1. I notice on their website Behringer have presets and guides for Live, Reaper, Logic and Bitwig, but not Sonar. You don't see that often. Sonar seems to be the kid in the schoolyard that no one wants to play with. Perhaps hardware manufacturers believe that Sonar users don't have wallets!

I work with Protools 12.5, Logic Pro X 10.2, Cubase 8.5 and Sonar Platinum...... I love Sonar Platinum because in my opinion it's a DAW done for musician by musician, and a musician does not have time to waste with an application but only with his creativity...... I would really like sonar that would offer a minimum of the potential of Sibelius on the musical notation, but you can not have everything in life, is not it ?!

That is good news. I too have bought a MOTOR keyboard (the 49 in my case) and I have installed Azslow's moded dlls. For me, faders (track volume) and rotary encoders (Pan pots) were assigned correctly on first attempt. BUT... I have not yet been able to switch fader banks (so I guess it'll be the same with rotary banks) Firmware here is 1.074... as far as I know I should be up to date. Have you done anything specific on your end to be able to switch fader / encoder banks? Regards.

Okay... just found out something weird looks like the "default" assignment of the four FADER BANKS butons and the four ENCODER BANKS buttons are kind of polarized. When powering up the unit, the FADER BANK button marked "1-8" lights up. ENCODER BANKS have none of its 4 buttons "lighted" (which I thought it would) ... the PAD BANK button marked "1-8" also is lighted up. Now for the strange part... It is my understanding that we should have at list one button selected in all of those 3 sections, right? Does not seem to be the case right now. The MOTOR only accepts ONE "button selection" for both the FADER and ENCODER banks sections!
When changing fader banks, nothing seems to change for faders, BUT the leds around the encoders are changing. AND... it is when I am pressing the ENCODER banks buttons "17-24" and "25-32" buttons that I can finally switch between banks of 8 tracks within SONAR!! ("17-24" looks like the "previous 8 tracks" button and the "25-32" one seems to be selecting the next bank of 8 tracks in a Sonar Project...) EDITED: Just doubled check the docs again and it seems like the Correct MC control mode layout for this unit... I somehow overlooked this information. Is the unit behaving like mine on your end?

Hi all, I followed the steps but not sure what I'm still missing. Motor61 isn't responding to Sonar for me. I don't know what I'm missing, but I don't even see the keyboard pop up under the Controller/Surface area like it show in the YouTube instructional video. I've selected the MIDI devices in the input/output sections (MOTOR61 Keyboard and MIDIOUT2 MOTOR61 Keyboar). I've tried every configuration for those ports and applying the changes. The only response I get is if I choose the same "device" for the input and output port (MOTOR61 Keyboard or the other). And the response I get is just a signal flicker on channel one showing that it's getting signal. It doesn't matter if I'm pressing keys, transport controls, drum pads, etc. Could someone walk a noob like me through the process of completely setting it up properly?

That's because its not there. Instead you will need to select "Mackie Control" from the Control/Surface dialog menu.

Ah, I seen this before. When you select MIDI I/O your instructing the Motor 61 receive/transmit MIDI thru the 5 pin MIDI ports, and NOT communicating or sending MIDI thru USB. That is how you would setup the Motor 61 to be used to control a hardware synth or module, not a DAW or softsynths. Make sure on setup that you select "USB" as I/O on the Motor 61 and standard "MC" (Mackie Control) on the Motor 61 itself, or Sonar won't see it and recognize it as a Mackie DAW controller. The Mackie Control panel window is built into SONAR, not part the Motor 61 drivers. The Keyboard section will still work as any generic MIDI keyboard, it'll just communicate thru USB. And the MIDI ports on the Motor 61 can than be used as an additional MIDI interface for another device or synth. In the instruction manual, as limited as it is, I believe there is a way to hold down a button while turning it on to get to the configuration/choice menu for this and things like checking and flashing your firmware version.

Thanks, Steve and Chuckebaby. I set the Motor 61 I/O to MMC only, but still no success. What is the configuration I should use for the Input and Output selection in the Sonar window (after Mackie Control is selected)?

Not MMC (transport mode) but MC (whole controller mode). Check Chapter 8 in the Motör User Manual. When correct mode is selected, you should be able to see "MIDIIN2 (MO...)" and "MIDIOUT2 (MO...)". These are Input and Output you should use with Mackie control. So DO NOT use "MOTÖRXX Keyboard" device for Mackie Control, it output keys but not controls (in MC mode). Without my mod installed, all you get is "Connecting..." message in the Control Bar ACT module. So you will need it and set "Disable handshake".

Oh, I see! I completely missed those pages in the manual last night when I was setting it up, but just downloaded it and see what you all are referring to now. So based on what you're saying, azslow3, the setup/configuration will be similar to the Reaper instructions? I'll do as you say when I get home from work tonight.

Yes, instructions for Reaper are close to what you need in Sonar. Note, that unlike Reaper, Sonar REQUIRES you to enable MIDI input and output you are going to use with MackieControl, do not forget "Apply" before moving into Control Surface section, otherwise you can not select them (in Reaper you should disable special surface IO in the MIDI section).

azslow3 Yes, instructions for Reaper are close to what you need in Sonar. Note, that unlike Reaper, Sonar REQUIRES you to enable MIDI input and output you are going to use with MackieControl, do not forget "Apply" before moving into Control Surface section, otherwise you can not select them (in Reaper you should disable special surface IO in the MIDI section).
azslow3, you are awesome! It turns out that my issue was with the .ini file. Once resolved, the faders flew into action. Now I have new issues I'm hoping you can help with: Nothing happens when I switch to fader banks other than 1-8. The same is true with the encoders and pads. Furthermore, if I try to switch my banks to 9-16 (for example) then switch back to 1-8 then 1-8 stops responding. Also, the master fader is not responding. The transports work great, however. Your thoughts?

Read the documentation, only some buttons make sense in MC mode. MCU (which it tries to imitate) has no any "fader banks". Check Utilities / Mackie Contro - 1 dialog for the Master fader setting (what it should control)
