[SOLVED] Really Getting Tired of Random Issues that Interrupt my Workflow
Now, SONAR doesn't see my MIDI device (USB MIDI Cable), so I have no MIDI input, and I cannot set the IN/OUT of my AlphaTrack. Alphatrack is there as a control surface, but not able to set IN or OUT, so it doesn't work. Only thing new is latest update.

Hey Zargg, I'm on Win 7 with automatic updates disabled, so no changes there. My Device Manager shows my USB cable and Alphatrack as being fine.

Well, Addictive Drums standalone is not seeing my MIDI cable either, so here I go again blaming poor old SONAR when it's not its fault! Something else is up. I see the MIDI cable in device manager, so I have no idea what's going on.

I uninstalled the MIDi cable drivers, Windows reinstalled automatically and everything seems fine. The weird thing is that neither SONAR nor AD2 standalone were seeing any MIDI devices and after only uninstalling the USB cable driver and reinstalling now SONAR and AD2 see all of my 3 MIDI devices. Weird!!!!!!

Zargg, Are you sure this happened after you updated Windows and not after you updated to SONAR 2016.10? Are you sure it was the Win update that broke it? Just wondering because I'm on Win 7 and the same thing happened and the only similarity is our version of SONAR. I have a feeling that in my case it happened after I updated SONAR.

Yes, I am sure. I used SONAR the night before, after updating, without any problems. When I started up the next day, Windows installed updates, and I did not have any AI, MIDI, Controllers, E Drums etc..

I really think that we have reached a point with the current Windows software updates that makes learning how to perform system image backups essential to avoid potential interruptions of workflow. Just pick one of the many options available, such as Macrium Reflect Free, and a USB drive large enough to hold a few backups of your PC (hopefully with images taken at least weekly, or at least before any major changes to your PC). If you have any issues after a Windows update (or even a Sonar update, or any hardware driver upgrade), you can roll back to your latest working PC image in just a few minutes. That could save you days of troubleshooting and frustration. Never having to re-install Windows to get it working again... priceless

Zargg Thanks, bigfrog. I usually try to keep my pc up to date, with both SONAR and windows. And I have wired connection on my studio pc. Will the same apply there? Might check it out. All the best.
bigfrog Zargg - I found this article for setting Ethernet connections as "metered". It's a little more involved tha for the wifi and involves some registry editing. http://www.windowscentral.com/how-set-ethernet-connection-metered-windows-10 I like to disable updates to have more control over, well, pretty much everything. If it aint broke don't fix it!
all you have to do regardless of connection type or version of windows 10 9home or pro) is to go to control panel/administrative tools/services then scroll down to windows update and right click on it and disable it, job done, i have seen many strange and wonderful ways of achieving the same result, some including registry hacks, there is no need and never has been, it's a simple matter and all done with a few clicks. i have had mine disabled for well over 3 months, before the anniversary update reared its ugly head (still on version 1511 i think it is), and have zero issues, in contrast to many folk who keep up to date and seem to have many various issues?, of course ymmv

Yep. The recent anniversary update caused issues with my AD2 registration and some other funky stuff. I use the Windows 7 Restore tool in Windows 10 and create a system image just about on a weekly basis. Overall I'm really pleased with Windows 10, but due to these issues (plus a stupid "suck in Airplane mode" issue that disabled my internet!!) I think doing a system image on a regular basis is probably a good practice.

Grimm is absolutely right. It is not that I don't update, I just take control of when it happens, and always use an imaging utility beforehand as abacab suggests. I think the idea that 'windows must be updated to the very latest version every second of the day' is not only overstated, it almost inevitably leads to workflow interruption. I found an excellent utility that gives you check box access to over 200 windows 10 settings (including updates, telemetry settings etc) in one easy place. It is simple, small and free: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ultimate-windows-tweaker-4-windows-10

I agree with this comment. Taking control is the key. I like Windows 10, but MS has apparently lost control of quality control, and is now depending on the community to effectively beta test all of their patches and upgrades. The monthly patch roll-up model no longer allows you to pick and choose from the monthly patches. In the past I would wait a week or so after patch Tuesday. With Windows set to check but not download and install updates, if I heard about a troublesome patch, I would hide it until MS issued a revision. If I felt it was otherwise all clear, I would take a system image, then install the remainder of the updates. Now you have to take the whole bunch, and if there is a busted patch, you have to roll the whole thing back. Also with the Windows 10 semi-annual upgrades, i.e. Anniversary Update, etc., I have heard that it is best to wait several months until the upgrade is well baked. Then based on feedback from the community, hopefully the majority of issues have been fixed. There is usually nothing in these upgrades that one needs to go rushing forward into, unless one wishes to beta test the latest MS features for MS, at the risk of your DAW's stability. The Anniversary Update is actually running a Windows Installer. I have noticed a lot of comments about software activations and other settings being reset as a result. It is very much like a fresh install of Windows in that regard. The monthly update roll-ups will include security patches as well as recommended updates, so it probably makes sense to pay attention to them. But the major upgrades can be deferred with various techniques as long as you wish, depending on your Windows version. And starting with the MS October updates, the cumulative roll-up model has been applied to Windows 7 and 8.1 ...
