Stretching audio clips i Melodyne
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to stretch vocal "Ahhs" & "Ooos" in melodyne. Can this be done? When I drag a note and make it longer (I can see it graphically stretching) and I play the part the audio stops where it usually did. Although I see the note extended in Melodyne, it doesn't extend the sound. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks

I don't know why this would happen. Are you using melodyne as a region effect? If you move a note in pitch can you hear it change? Maybe try bouncing the melodyne clip to see if rendering it does anything different. I use melodyne quite a bit and have not had any trouble like that. Oh, another idea, try bouncing the clip first before applying melodyne.

Thank you for responding. Yes, when I move notes I can hear the pitch change. I tried the other two suggestions bouncing the clip before and then I tried after-neither worked. Have you been able to take a single ah or ohh and stretch the note so that, let's say the note originally lasted 3 seconds and you were able to stretch it so that it lasted longer, say 6 seconds or however long you stretched it? I assumed the "time tool" would somehow change the duration of a note- either shorter or longer. I did just tried "shortening" the note and that worked. But when I tried to extend the note, it doesn't work. So now I'm believing that the time tool can only shorten a note but not extend it. I must be missing something here or I'm not sure if what I want to do is possible with melodyne. If Melodyne can't do this, Is there other plug-in that can. Any other thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I've accomplished this without Melodyne by just stretching the end of the clip in Sonar If I remember correctly it's Ctrl/Shift and drag the clip end

that stretches the clips, but I'm getting weird artifacts doing it. There's got to be a better way. I've seen this done at a studio I use to go to years ago. Thanks

Hi. Have you tried to bounce to clip after stretching? I have also done this several times, with good results. All the best.

It has its limits, that is for sure. But usable for stretching a bit. The shorter the better  All the best.

As Ken mentioned, bounce it. Also I believe you can also pick your algorithm in the inspector. Changing it to a different setting produces better results.

I have not tried, but maybe try to do it in several stretches? Stretch, bounce, repeat...

They're called the "laws of physics," not "the suggestions of physics," for a reason I've worked with many different stretch algorithms from many programs, and there is a limit past which you simply will not get acceptable results. Different algorithms react differently. The offline stretch algorithm in SONAR is actually very good, after you render it. zPlane makes excellent algorithms as well but the differences are minimal, if even noticeable, in terms of quality. It's always better to shorten rather than lengthen. When shortening, you remove data but to lengthen, you have to create data that never existed. That's a tough task, even for today's computers and DSP. You may get better results from splitting the clip, lengthening both parts, copying the tail, then doing multiple crossfades of the tails. it's hard to recommend specifics without hearing the audio, but the latter is how I sometimes manage to do "impossible" stretches.
