After last Windows 10 update I can't "save as" anything!

Help!  Windows 10 has suddenly (I assume the last update is at fault), decided I can't save or save as, anything that I attempt to download. It's frustrating because I can't get my Plug In Alliance b_x rooMS, that I bought yesterday.

Is this an administrator thing? Any help will be very much appreciated!
Michael

Shouldn't be an issue Michael.  Try shutting down and restarting
and see if it goes away...

Mike,

Like Larry said. Restart and pray.

Fired up the laptop today. Taking a long time to boot and then the don't turn off your computer message. Win 10 installing updates. Bloody mess. Nothing qualitative would connect and took forever to launch any program. This happened before with the automatic updates that took out my video card. After a couple restarts, it only takes 3 minutes to boot. At least I can get to the DAW.

Advice would be to clone a working image on an external drive to undo the win 10 invasion in case everything goes south.

Concerned about the cancer invasion of win 10 on many levels that we can see and those we can't. Big Brother is watching, moving in, and not for the good of any of us.

just disable windows update, it's just a couple of clicks regardless of if you have home or pro version, mine has been disabled for well over 3 months and i don't have any issues, ironically a lot of people who do stay up to date seem to be suffering constant issues. ymmv

A couple of ideas, Michael...
  1. Make sure you have a good, up-to-date antivirus and run a full scan.
  2. If you're still having problems, try uninstalling the most recent Windows Updates one-by-one, testing along the way.

In my case, each time win10 updates it deletes all restore points. All attempts to reset, restore, or reinstall fail. Downloaded the win tool & win image today. Will see how far they get when I get home.

1=Install Windows 10 from Microsoft website: Successful!

2=Set WiFi to Metered Connection to limit Windows Update: Successful!

3=Create restore point: Successful!

4=Install Sonar

Hey Soens,

When viewing your post, those moving mouse pointers almost made me drop my phone! I thought they were gnats or bugs crawling on my screen!

And after the Windows 10 anniversary update the first thing I did was enable the metered connection. I had no idea what was going on with that anniversary update until I turned on my PC and after about an hour, it finally booted up to the log on screen. I was seriously pissed because I had about an hour to do some touching up on an X3 project and thanks to the update, I had to finish up later that night.

And good one with those moving mouse pointers! :)

Regards,
Steve

Restart didn't do anything, yet. Soens; thanks for the laugh!
Thanks to you all for all the suggestions. I'll post back after I try some more.

Which version windows 10 do you have?
What are steps for this in the free upgrade windows 10 version?
Seems many say this can't be disabled in the base 10 version.
Thanks.

i have 3 desktops and 2 laptops with a mixture of windows 10 pro and windows 10 home, the version doesn't matter, never has, it works for all. (i have both free upgrade and commercial versions)

control panel/administrative tools/services/scroll down to 'windows update, right click and disable.

if and when you want to re enable updates just enable it again. i believe there are little utilities available now to do this and various other things, but i prefer not to install that kind of stuff, and it doesn't take much effort to do it the way described. i have had updates disabled for over 3 months now, still on version 1511 with zero issues, remained on a much earlier version for 8+ months way back with no issues. i don't intend on re enabling updates, unless of course something happens that makes it necessary, but in my experience that isn't likely, i have never come across such a situation in the past.

Some don't recommend disabling it completely. If you're using wifi you can go to Settings > WiFi, click on your connection and set Metered connection to ON.

that will only work for so long, and when that time is up, update you will.

disabling allows you to take control, update if and when you choose permanently

OK Here's a heads up on my situation. Scott Garrigus asked if this not being able to "save as" was only in IE and it is. So, it may not be my PC, Windows 10 or the moon phase! More later, if I get a chance to explore more.
I wish I knew as much about being online, PC's and Windows, as I do about music!

Try Opera or Firefox. I don't believe Edge is ready for prime time yet.

If you are running win 10 its likely you are running Edge not IE. You could have made that your default though.

I've been using Firefox since before version 1. It's my daily driver. Opera has been sold to the Chinese, if that matters to you. I have privacy issues with Google, so I mostly only use Chrome on Google sites.

Internet Explorer is hidden away in Windows 10. Right-click the "Start" button, click Run, then type iexplore and press enter. Once you have IE running, right click its icon down on the taskbar and choose "Pin to taskbar" if you want an easier way to launch it.

I am aware, that I am in fact, still using IE and Firefox, when I get pissy with IE. I passed on Edge. LOL
I know that I'll have to give it up, but have no intention of getting close to the edge! I have only a passing awareness of Chrome. If Firefox had easier favorites, like IE, I wouldn't bother "shopping".

PS I have short cuts for them on my desktop, too.

I find Firefox bookmarks easier to use than IE's favorites, but to each his own.

Another tip...

For me, the menu bar is hidden in IE by default, so you can either hit the Alt key to bring it up or unhide the menu bar (right-click up top by the tabs/title bar).

Edge is a mess but MS is pushing it hard and pushing IE out. One has to take proactive action to get rid of Edge. Go into Settings and set all your defaults to the proper program. Then when win10 updates you'll probably have to do it all over again.

I like IE but remember when it 1st started it was a mess 2. Eventually MS will get it straight and Edge will replace IE forever.
