New Foam

I got these panels to replace 12"x12" wedge type around my desk.
The black wedge I glued to drywall around a decade. They were a mess. Couldn't vac them, they'd just fall apart.
BUT- they did fit together good unlike these. 
I glued these panels to pegboard - 2'x4' -screwed to wall. One run is 2' x 8' other 2' x 5'
Wasn't going to glue them to the drywall-learned that was not good.
Nice to have clean foam but it would have been better if they would have matched up to each other.
Could trim to make them- none of the edges cut to pattern and I needed them full size to fit nice.
Thought I'd mention. May be others that like and expect things to be...right.
 
Oh...burgundy is a nice change from the black. They offer blue too. Not sure why shades/colors limited but oh well.
 

 

craigb, how do egg cartons sound?

Thanks for the tips Bit and the color isn't such a deal. Just seems they'd offer more, marketing plus but what do I know?
 
Mainly posted to warn of the quality. I spent $80.00 ( 4 panels)  I felt it should at least be uniform cuts and they should match-up together. I mean they're cut so bad a single panel doesn't even look right.
 
 

The foam? I don't know how much difference it makes with my set-up. I put it up back when I got the JBLs and they have the control software. Pretty cool and it works for me. (the pic doesn't show changes it makes when test is run)
I put the wedges up when I got the speakers and put this stuff up so I didn't have to repair and paint the drywall and I also like the dark background. 
 
Maybe this stuff will last as long as the wedges. Either way since my DAW is in the den, I'm not trying to be a producer and the stuff is a dust collection problem I'll be repairing drywall and painting when it comes down.

Since you've attached the foam to pegboard and screwed them to the wall, consider adding some spacers behind them to create a void between the pegboard and the wall. If you can manage a gap equal to the thickness of the foam you'll drop the lowest frequency they'll be effective at by half or more.
 
The reason for limited color options is that the dye is mixed in with the foam during manufacture. So when they make, say, a burgundy run they'll be making a whole bunch of it at one time. You could no doubt special-order a batch of pink or chartreuse, but it'd have to be a big enough order to justify making several pallets' worth.

Bacon might actually make a pretty good absorber, if you had enough of it. And kept the room cold. Cooked bacon, OTOH, would last longer but probably work worse than egg cartons.
 
BTW, I have a pdf here (sorry, don't remember where I got it) that documents a serious (ASTM Standard Test Method for Sound Absorption and Sound Absorption Coefficients) test of egg cartons as acoustical treatments. 
 
They found that egg cartons had an absorption coefficent of 0.82 at 5 KHz, meaning that 82% of the energy was absorbed. That's not bad. In fact it's not much worse than 1" Auralex panels. Unfortunately, below 5 KHz absorption fell off rapidly, and had essentially no effect below 500 Hz. The NRC rating (average of coefficents at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz) was 0.05, about the same absorption as an unpainted brick wall. It would take 10 layers of egg cartons to equal even a 1" Auralex panel's wimpy 0.5 NRC rating.
 
So rather than being a good absorber, egg cartons are more like placing a low-pass filter across the room.
