Kontakt Outputs - Missing Something
There are multiple threads about adding outputs to Kontakt and I have looked at tutorials on NI's site, but I am missing something fundamental. Perhaps someone can help. Here is what I want to do: - Load one instance of Kontakt in Sonar - Load two instruments into Kontakt - Route the two instruments to two separate tracks in Sonar. When I add outputs to Kontakt I still only have one track in Sonar and I am not clear on the different to Kontakt in outputs and channels. Can someone tell me how to accomplish what I am describing above? The reason is that my copy of Sonar stops outputting audio after 7-9 VIs, despite my CPU power and memory.

In Kontakt, you set one instrument to ouput st. 1, the other to output st. 2. Instruments should be on Midi channel 1 and 2 by default.
In Sonar, you create an additional Audio track and set input to Kt.St2/Kt.St2R Stereo of Kontakt. The initial Kontakt audio track defaults to st. 1. The same for Midi, where you have to create an additional Midi track in Sonar with output set to Kontakt channel 2, and the initial Midi track has to be set to channel 1. Not sure, but it should work the same if you use a combined instrument track initially.

Be sure that you have all audio outputs checked in the properties dialog when you load Kontakt. The other thing I would advise is create a mixer within Kontakt that is set the way you want and save it to be recalled when you start Kontakt. Plus Kontakt comes in 3 output versions 8 16 and 32. You may need to edit its friendly name to show which is which.

All good advice but with one little addition: You can always start with "First Synth Audio Output" even if you load the Kontakt 32 stereo/64 mono plug-in version and you are still be able to add more outputs afterwards by adding a new audio track and routing its input to Kontakt. All Kontakt's outputs - 8, 16, or 64 (depending on the version you inserted) are always available independent from what you choose in "Insert Soft Synth Options".

Thanks, guys! This sounds pretty straightforward and I will give it a shot this week-end.

You've nailed it here. The only thing I'd add is *I think* the only one worth working with is the 64 out version (32 stereo) so I disabled the other 2 in Sonar. Also, since Kontakt can only do 16 midi channels as a vsti - - - I built a 16 stereo pairs st.1 through st.16 mixer in Kontakt and set it to be the default every time Kontakt loads and everything has been really easy since then. Finally, I create templates in Sonar. 1) Project template that is called Kontakt 16 2) 5 track templates K1, K2, K3, K4, K5 so I can easily add an other instace of Kontakt and have the bus routing correct for each additional instance. My project and track templates have 16 midi channels and 16 stereo audio channels all correctly assigned to that specific instance of Kontakt, all in folders named like "K5 1 Midi" / "K5 1 Audio" so all I need to do is either load a Kontakt multi that has the audio outs for each instrument already assigned, or load instruments one at a time and change the audio out for each instrument. An other helpful thing I discovered is that we can highlight the title of a Kontakt Instrument in Kontakt, Hit CTRL+C to copy the name, and then CTRL+V to paste the name into the midi and audio track that instrument uses.

Great info - I happen to also do a couple other things, after loading the desired instruments into a given Kontakt instance: 1) In the Kontakt instance, at the top is a button to toggle on/off the display of the Output Section. I make sure that is on, so that I can manipulate things in the Output Section. 2) By default, even though Kontakt will automatically increment the midi channel by one, every time another instrument is added - it will assign all the outputs to the ST1 main stereo output channel. Since I want individual control of each audio output from each loaded instrument, I run one of the Kontakt Batch Functions (you will see this down in the output section) - I expand the Batch Options and run the one that clears all outputs and creates one stereo output for each loaded instrument. This will do just that. 3) The one downside of the above is that it renames each output channel to some strange mashup of the instrument's name. SO, the simple fix is to double-click on each Output Channel name, and change it to something easy to read, short, and simple, like Piano, Rhodes, Organ, Violin, Bass, etc. This makes setting the input assignments for each of the audio tracks simple - just match the audio Piano track(s) to the Piano output channel from the appropriate Kontakt instance - either Piano Stereo, or a Piano Left and a Piano Right, etc. I hope that helps - it took WAY longer to reread what I typed above, than it would take to actually DO the above steps, but I wanted to try to explain it properly. :) Bob Bone
