Profiling Equalizer

I'm looking for an equalizer that can capture a profile of a track I admire and that can then apply that EQ profile to my own stuff.

I've never used one before and I'd prefer it if it was simple to use, anyone got any suggestions.

Thanks - rev

izotope has this as part of its feature set with several profiles loaded from various albums.   You select it and it will setup the eq section accordingly.

    good luck!

A rack of noisemakers is not a definitive substitute for creativity. (though it does seem to help)

The least-expensive one I know of would be MAutoDynamicEQ when it's on sale (which it is ATM).

I would, however, only recommend it (or Pro-Q2 or Ozone) because it'll remain useful to you after you've figured out that EQ-matching doesn't work.

Well, I shouldn't say it never works. If you're trying to match dialog or vocal takes recorded at different times or with different microphones, that's what EQ-matching is meant for. Sometimes it'll help you with guitar tones if you're already pretty close. But you'll quickly discover that it's a useless technique for mastering.

That's given me pause. Maybe I'll try Pro Q2 in eval mode first.

I have to agree with this Dave. I don't see the point of it overall. The situations you point out makes sense otherwise I believe it to be a very limited feature. I did try it a very long time ago with no real usefulness that I could see.

Good thinking. It won't cost you anything to give it a try, and if you're like most of us mortals you'll fall in love with Pro-Q anyway regardless of EQ-matching.

TDR Slick EQ "M" edition will do it.
Mautodynamiceq is what I use, but honestly this never works well on it's own.
It's a good way to see where the differences are, and then go back and work on the mix.

Maybe I was dreaming. I had an idea that if my songs all sounded like, say AC/DC, I could profile some of their songs and it then benefit from all the superior expertise and equipment that went into their sound.

OK, I'll come back earth and try the Pro Q.

Don't give up on the idea of profiling. It's good to compare your mixes to the ones you admire most, and seeing it laid out clearly in a graph can pinpoint where the weaknesses are in your own approach, or even identify weaknesses in your monitoring.

There's nothing wrong with referencing other people's mixes, or using visual aids to do it. It's just automated EQ-matching that's a false promise.

Logic has one, which I sometimes use as a quick reference - I don't think I've ever applied it though. But it does a fair job at providing a quick glance at which areas of the spectrum need more work.

I'd hate not to have access to it but I'm not sure I'd invest money into such a plug-in if it wasn't bundled with my DAW.

When I purchased my Powercore set up over 10 / 12 years ago I should think, an Eq matching piece of software came with it - it was called Assimilator.
I have never even loaded it up and tried it, because as Dave says, it doesn't work!!

The first I remember seeing was Steinberg's Free Filter, in early 2001-02.

Like 99% of Steinberg's plug-ins, it was discontinued no too long after.

Kind of like your girlfriend or wife attempting to judge you or shape you based on her understandings of her previous boyfriend's profiles.

Sounds nice in theory, but the results are not satisfactory.
