Same up here (almost - not quite bikini-appropriate anymore). A couple of weeks ago it got damned cold, normal for November. So I decided to quit smoking again, because I don't enjoy them when i'm forced out of my igloo into the snowstorm for 5 minutes of fighting off the hypothermia and polar bears. Now it's nice again, and my smoking-buddies are all outside in t-shirts, enjoying the sun while I'm hiding in my office in the clean-but-canned air.

Hawaii had snow today, with up to three feet being predicted over the next couple of days. While the peaks of the mountains get snow every year, this is apparently very odd. BTW, it's not really currently referred to as "global warming" so much as "climate change" to cover all aspects of the problem. Mostly, I've found those who choose to disbelieve the scientific studies often continue to use the term "global warming" in order to debunk the idea in their next sentence. The issues of which climatologists, meteorologists, and others speak are not limited to "global warming" at all.

If it helps, I don't believe in "climate change" either. Actual scientific data proves that the climate has changed drastically throughout Earth's existence, so why wouldn't we expect to see it still changing?

The difference here is who/what is changing the climate and the rate at which it is changing. Hence, the proposed term "anthropocene" to describe the current state of affairs, climate-wise. FWIW.

Up and down in this armpit of North Europe. Early snow in November, then between -8C and +8C except for the northern part of the country, where the weather is good for winter tourism. And regarding the above quotes.... I'm sure the scientists do know the climate history of this globe. To me, there are two basic arguments or "problem definitions" in this matter: 1) Nobody knows exactly and for sure how, when and what is causing how much of what at the moment. The number of variables is immense. However, if the leading scientists all around the world agree upon the seriousness of the situation (even though disagree about some details), then I, an average industrial worker, have little reason to assume I know better. The actual scientific data also shows, that changes, that used to take thousands of years, have lately taken place in a few decades. 2) Even if the degree and effect of the expected warming would be far less than the worst case scenarios, it would still change the world as we know it very dramatically. So much actually, that even the thought of it is too much to handle for many. And does it actually make a difference if the problems are expected to start 100 years or 300 years from now? If it happens we can do something to minimize the problems, or to postpone them by a few hundred years, then shouldn't we? If we do things "in vain", there's hardly any damage. If we don't do anything and the "prophecies" are correct, we'll be in deep troubles generations earlier than otherwise inevitable.

*Global warming* and *white privilege* are both poly tickal concepts now. So whether it's TRUE or not is not relevant. It's a narrative about power.

You speak very well when you describe the scenario as political in nature and a narrative about power. Unfortunately, pretty much everything is now politicized and a narrative about power (on both sides of the aisle, I'm afraid.) However, whether it "true or not" remains "relevant" and extremely important if the science is to be believed. The science remains a separate issue logistically. While it is certainly admitted that the science will be manipulated or denied as our politicians' ambitions warrant, the facts still exist apart: the poles are shrinking, the water is rising, the weather patterns are messed. And Kalle Rataaho is correct: what difference does it make if we're talking 100 or 300 years?

Had to stay home on Thursday (gee, bummer! ), but yesterday sucked. I was actually up at 4:30am for some unknown reason and all dressed in a nice suit and tie for a different whacked out reason (holiday party after work), then spent 20 minutes scraping ice off my car windows which I had already done before going to bed to make it easier (well, all the windows except the one that got broken into a few days ago). Finally got the car warmed up, got in (now wet because there were ice pellets coming down the entire time I was scraping). I made one turn in my cul-de-sac and slid down the street... Managed to sllloooowwwwllllyyy turn around and make it back to the curb in front of my house. Then had to wait until 10:30am before I tried again. It was still sliding a bit but, once I got on the main streets, I was able to creep along with the other idiots that should have stayed home again. Oh yeah, the suit got ditched for more comfortable clothes. Yay, Winter!

I got back from being out of town just in time. Just as I was driving up to my house the little flakes started to come down (along with a strong wind, it's flippin' cold out there!). I've heard of winds over 50 mph and it's already 26 F at my Mom's place.
