Matrix view MIDI learn - only hardwire devices?

Hi,

After the November update I decided to get familiar with the Matrix view. I'm using Maschine Mikro a lot and I tried to make the Matrix view cells trigger by Maschine. I have set up Maschine software to run inside Sonar as a plug-in. I noticed I couldn't get Maschine to trigger Matrix view cells this way but with hardwire MIDI mode it works as it should. So my question is that is this the way it's designed to be or is it a bug?

PS. Really loving the update so far. I can finally get rid of those sticky notes and do all my notes inside a project smooth and fast.

Sonar Platinum running on: Intel i7-2600k, ASUS P8Z68-V Pro, Kingston V300 SSD 240GB + OCZ 60GB SSD + Samsung 1TB HDD, 16GB Ram, E-MU 0404 USB

Matrix triggering works with the same "Remote control" as the rest of Sonar. Many parts of Sonar can be also controlled using Control Surfaces way, but not the Matrix. Also till they have fixed that (I have not checked yet, but it is not mentioned in eZine), "Remote control..." feature has a nasty bug if you use any MIDI tracks (assigned controls still "leaks" as not assigned as MIDI input, so as soon as some MIDI track is in "echo" mode, the softsynth will receive all these "matrix switches"; depending how particular plug-in is interpreting MIDI, you for example get unexpected sounds or (invisibly) silence the Synth while the intention was just to start some audio clip in the Matrix... I use a workaround to avoid such problems).
So, to control the Matrix some "MIDI device input" is required. It can be hardware or software (software MIDI loopback).

Good to know about the leak bug.

OK, so if I interpreted this right the Maschine should be able to trigger Matrix also through the software input. Seems like a bug.

I have only been able to use hardware assignments in MV. Some soft synths pass their own MIDI, but could not get "MIDI learn" to accept these.

I have only been able to use hardware assignments in MV. Some soft synths pass their own MIDI, but could not get "MIDI learn" to accept these.

I had to be more precise, and EXTERNAL MIDI Loop software is required to "MIDI Learn" Matrix. For Software synth MIDI output to be used, it should be routed to some dedicated MIDI track (as the only input), with "ECHO always on" and the output set to external "MIDI Loop". Than this "MIDI Loop" as input can be used for Matrix.

To avoid "MIDI leaks", install my AZ Controller as a Control Surface, with the input set to "MIDI Loop" (the output to "Note"). In the Options tab change "Block assigned MIDI messages" to "Block all channel messages" (that is the only setting required for this use case). After that, you still can use "MIDI Loop" for Matrix or other "Remote control" in Sonar, but nothing from it will "leak" into normal MIDI tracks. But watch out if you start Sonar without first starting external MIDI Loop! Sonar likes to "forget" the input assignments for Control Surfaces, AZ Controller will no longer "block" "MIDI Loop" when it is available again.
