Problem Trying to Assign Outputs (Sonar and Kontakt 5)
Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, and a new user to Sonar Platinum and Kontakt, though not really new to Sonar. I'm trying to assign outputs to a Brass Ensemble instance I set up and I'm running into a problem setting the outputs. Normally, when I go to assign, I see something like this in the drop down: Kt. horn: Left (mono) Kt. horn: Right (mono) Kt. horn/Kt.horn: R. Stereo For some reason, however, when I get to a certain point of adding instruments, the menu changes to something like this, combining two instruments together: Kt. bass: Left (mono) Kt. horn: Right (mono) Kt. bass/Kt. horn: Stereo This results in neither of the tracks outputting, and no matter how many things I add after, or how many times I delete these tracks and try to start over, it doesn't work; it doesn't get "fixed." Does anyone have a solution for this? Help is much appreciated.

This has been around for ages I don't know if it is a Kontakt thing or a Sonar thing, as I avoid the whole problem because I always limit the number of instruments in a given instance of Kontakt to 5-6, and then it doesn't mess up the display. Bob Bone

I've never had this problem before and I often use up to 16 instruments per instance of Kontakt. I could not reproduce this problem here. And I've been through several versions of Sonar and also Kontakt for years. Are you using Kontakt Player or Kontakt full? Which version? Have you tried with another version of Kontakt? Also try inserting the channels in Kontakt, without renaming them. Another possibility is, as already mentioned, open new instances of Kontakt, which even better distributes the use of the processor (meanwhile it consumes more RAM).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1kGH2A9xKfw Heres a video I made - actually outlining some of the things the Robert Bone above helped increase my awareness of, although I see that you have already covered many of the steps outline in it. I have never been able to get Sonar to properly label more than 4 outputs from Kontakt, although it did recieve proper audio to the channels, they just arent labeled the way I would like.

Thanks. I've tried all of the above. I started with the free Kontakt and am now on the full version (both Kontakt 5). I have tried several instances of Kontakt, which doesn't have the problem but also because with several instances I'm not getting up to the number of channels that would cause the problem. @thedukewestern - your video was the one I watched when I first got Kontakt to learn how to set it up. Thanks for making it! :) Unfortunately, the problem still persists. Really don't know where to go from here, and I appreciate the time getting back to me. Wish I had a solution.

Another thing that I do is that after loading up 4-6 instruments into a single Kontakt instance, I run one of the batch functions (look in the Output Section and you will see where you can open up a list of Batch Functions) - the one that I run is the one to clear out the Output Section and create an output for each loaded instrument. With limiting the number of loaded instruments, and the batch function to recreate the Output Section with a stereo output channel for each loaded instrument, I never have the issue anymore of screwed up routing assignments. If you REALLY want to make things easy to read, the one other thing I do with each output channel is to double-click on each output channel's name (a mashed up condensed version of the preset), and I rename each output channel name to something that makes more sense and is shorter. SO, instead of some crazy squished up name, I will name it Piano, or Rhodes, or Violin, or Bass, etc.) Then when I am making routing assignments for the associated audio tracks, it is easy to see Piano Left, Piano Right, etc. Bob Bone

Bob, Thank you. I have tried those methods as well. One of the reasons why this doesn't work for me all of the time is that when I'm writing I don't necessarily know up front what all of the tracks will be, and clearing out/reassigning with a batch becomes tedious. That said, I have tried that option as well. I should be clear that this doesn't happen all the time; only when I have a 16 or 64 output instance of Kontakt running and start to get past seven (or so) instruments. I can't go any further with assignments.

Yeah - I have never been able to solve that issue, however since I have 32 GB of memory in my computer, I have always found the best performance for me by limiting a given instance of Kontakt to maybe 6 loaded instruments, as Sonar will distribute the work load across available CPU cores better by using more instances, versus using less instances with more instruments in each instance. Noel had weighed in on that some time back during some discussions about it all, and his recommendation was to split instances into several, rather than one giant one. In any case, I never try to load more than 6 instruments into a single Kontakt instance. Bob Bone

Again - it is not a bad thing to have additional instances. It uses some more memory, however it distributes the CPU load across cores much better. Have fun! :) Bob Bone
